Then become a mentor!!

 

The Advanced Academy Mentor Program is for those UWG students who successfully completed the Academy and wish to live in Gunn Hall and be active members of the Gunn Hall/Academy community. Mentors can be a valuable asset to the community and have the opportunity to give back to the program. Outstanding mentors will be provided, upon request, with recommendation letters verifying their success and contributions. Before applying, students should be aware of the following:

 

• Mentors will be selected by the end of spring semester. However, the Academy admissions application deadline is June 1 so the Academy will not know how many, if any, rooms will be available for mentors until early to mid June. Mentors will need to be prepared to make alternate living arrangements if space is not available in Gunn Hall.

• Mentors are expected to assist an RA at least once a month with a program and are expected to be involved in at least one activity, such as yearbook, Residence Hall Council, Judicial Board, or the Gunn Gazette.

• Mentors are also expected to be available to the current Academy students for advice and help with study, research, and all that is required to make a successful college student. The staff understands that mentors are full-time students and will never expect them to sacrifice their own academic success, but they are expected to manage their lives in such a way as to allow time for the Gunn community.

• Any mentor who is not determined by the professional staff to be meeting the requirements for being a mentor will not be allowed to continue living in Gunn Hall and will be relocated as space on campus permits.

• Mentors are expected to have and maintain a 3.2 UWG GPA and cannot have received more than fifty discipline points while a student in the Academy. 

• Mentors may request a private room, but will be required to pay the additional charge. Mentors are NOT allowed to room with Academy students.

• Mentors are subject to the same policies as any other non-Academy student living in Gunn Hall and will be required to sign a behavioral agreement.

• Mentors are expected to move in early in the fall in order to participate in training and assist the Academy ambassadors during new student move in.

Interested students will need to write an essay (500-1000 words) explaining their desire to be a mentor, how they intend to contribute to the Academy and the Gunn Hall community, and how they intend to manage their time. Application essays are due by April 20, 2012 for the 2012-13 academic year. Students will be notified by April 27 if they have been accepted as mentors, final acceptance pending their spring grades.
