Recommendation 1:
- We propose modifying the Arts & Sciences by-laws (Article IV - Department Chair) as follows:
Add another section under Article IV:
Section 5. The performance of each department chair shall be reviewed annually by the Dean. Each department chair shall submit an annual report to the Dean. The Dean shall meet with each chair to review her/his performance. The Dean will provide a written evaluation, signed by the chair and the Dean, for inclusion in the chair's file.
- We propose modifying the Faculty Annual Review Guidelines as follows:
Delete "and Department Chair" from the following section:
ANNUAL REVIEW (Faculty Member
and Department Chair)
In addition to departmental requirements and those in the faculty handbook, the faculty member could show evidence of maintaining a teaching portfolio in each annual review. The faculty member might also outline specific goals and objectives for the upcoming year and identify acceptable percentage ranges for each area.Add a new paragraph for the Department Chair:
ANNUAL REVIEW (Department Chair)
In addition to departmental requirements and those in the faculty handbook, the department chair could show evidence of maintaining an administrative portfolio in each annual review. The department chair might also outline specific goals and objectives for the upcoming year and identify acceptable percentage ranges for each area. The areas of evaluation for the department chair are: administration; teaching; service; and professional growth and development.
Recommendation 2:
We recommend that each chair submits her/his annual activities using a short and concise report of 2-5 pages. The report includes, distribution of effort and time (current and projected) over the various areas of evaluation/responsibility, and a list of activities/accomplishments for each area in bullets form. Click here to see our suggested outline of the report (MS Word file).
Notes:
- Some ideas on what to include under "Administration" (i.e. these ideas/topics cover most of the common duties/responsibilities of a chair): achieving departmental/university mission/goals; supporting/facilitating faculty excellence in teaching, service, and scholarship; developing, implementing, and evaluating quality undergraduate/graduate programs; implementing Departmental/College/University policies and procedures; preparing College/University/System reports; recruiting quality faculty and students; seeking, obtaining, and allocating funds; advocating for students and faculty; creating an effective work environment for faculty and staff; directing assessment and accreditation activities; representing the department to the Institution, the System, and the Community; etc.
- Additional information may be found in the reference section.
