Question With regards to problem sheet 1 it should be brought to people's attention that there is a mistake in question 6. 2.8% decay should not be presented as -0.28 but as -0.028. My question is about whether we will be covering the topic of half-life in the lectures and tutorials before problem sheet 1 is due.
Answer - Many thanks for the comment. The error was fixed in the web (Tutorial Sheet One).
With regard to your question, I will talk about half-life on Monday.
Question When can we get the answers to all the tutorial's questions for revision?
Answer - The answers to the assignment questions will be given to students each week after they have handed their assignments.
The answers to the other questions in tute sheets might not be prepared for the students. So they are left for students to solve.
Question When will the solutions to the problem sheets be posted?
Answer - Either you solve them yourself or be patient.
Question Where can I get lecture notes of this course from. I have missed a lecture.
Answer - You need to get this from one of the students. I don't have a lecture note. Or come to me and I'll tell you which pages you need to read to cover that missing lecture.
Question I like the idea of your page. Do you think you could also post lecture notes on here for those students who can't keep up in class? Or maybe you can put them on the Griffith homepage.
Answer - I do not have lecture notes. In my notes I only writes the questions and the titles which I intend to talk about. And usually I make examples in the class and they are not in my notes.
Question Can you please explain the relevence of doing calculus in the evironmental course. Stats is an understood part of the course, but just a quick explaination why, would be much appreciated by all students im sure.
Answer - I was told this is a new subject to help students with maths. If you don't like it please talk to Professor Hogarth. I am not in a position to decide which subject is good for environmental course and which one is bad!!
From my point of view it's good since I get paid for teaching this!!
Question I can not get the Problem Sheets to print on my computer at home or on the computers at uni, I have downloaded the Ghostscript but it still does not work for me. Is there any other way of getting the Problem Sheets?
Answer - Come and see me please. I'll show you how to get this working on my computer. Have you got a netscape?
Question I am having difficulty in downloading the answers to the tutorial problem sheets. You need to have a plug in of some type and the computers in the common use labs here at Griffith do not seem to have this. Is there another way we can see the answers without having to download some plug in? Cheers
A lost soul searching for the answers to the maths questions...
Answer - I will explain this in my lecture if I don't forget!
Question Can you please post the chapters of the book that we need to review for the exam??
Any maybe put some review questions on the web??
Answer - Pages 3-154 and pages 636-639 from your text book. There will not be any question on MATLAB. There are many examples in my web. Click on MT150. The files are in postscript files.
Question I'm confused about the notes in the maths office. There are only three batches of notes and they say weeks 1, 2 & 3. Firstly, I didn't think these corresponded to the first 3 weeks lectures (that is, week 1 didn't end where the notes in the office ended, etc) and secondly, is this all of the notes that will be put in the maths office? It wasvery helpful to have those notes in the office, will it be continued?
Answer - I don't really know what you are talking about. There will be weekly tute sheets and the solutions will be given before exams. There is no lecture notes for the subject. You either need to attend in the class and prepare you own lecture notes or get that from a friend who attends in the class. You may also follow the subject from the text book.
Question I was wondering if you have covered the Matlab for the mid semester exam for AES 1141. And were do i find the past mim semester exam i could not find it on your web site. Thank you
Answer - There won't be any MATLAB question in mid semester exam nor in final exam.
Since this subject is a new subject there are no past mid semester exam. But what you can do is going to my web site and click on MT150 which is offered at UQ. You may find some difficult questions in MT150 and not be able to solve them. But do not get disappointed. Our exams at GU will be much much easier than UQ.
Question Can you put the results for the Mid Semester Exam on your web page or on the Uni web site?
Answer - I'll think about your suggestion.
Question Could you please put up all the chapters we've covered so far so we can get extra notes off the book. thank you.
Answer - Visit my web site. Click on aes1141 then course outline. The outline of the syllabus is in Page 3. So far, we have covered Chapters 1, 2 and 3. These are Functions, Matrices and Limits. We are now studying Differentiations.
Question I'd just like to take this opportunity to commend you on the increased use of 'life science' and more practical questions. They do help to put this subject and the work we are learning in its environmental and scientific context. Thank you.
Answer - Many thanks for the comment. I just want to teach the rules first then will do enough practical questions.
Question Where are the results for the Mid Semester Exam posted?
Answer - They should be on the wall next to the Dean Office. I have also put a copy of that in my web site (www.maths.uq.edu.au/~ak).
Question Dear Abdollah, I am finding the weekly problem sheets very confusing, particularly this week's (week 12 problem sheet 11. Question 1 (d) has proved a complete confusion with many students and tutors. What is the question relating to? When the function moves to the left is it negative? If so is it moving to the left from the point 1 or 4? As the line from x=1 to x=4 (the turning points)is decreasing, so does this make it moving to the left? Could you please explain?
Thank you-
Completely confused
Answer - When v is positive the object moves to the right and when v is negative the object moves to the left.
When v (velocity) and a (acceleration) both are positive or both are negative the speed goes up. When they have different signs the speed goes down.
I'll provide you the solutions for these questions next week.
Question Is there any way of looking at our exams and seeing our mistakes?
Answer - Check with Deslie at AES office. The exam papers are not with me.
Question Can you please tell us all the chapters of the book that we have to know for this terms exam and also when the exam is?
Answer - I'll talk about the format of final exam questions on next Thursday. I will also point out that which chapters you need to study.
Question Hi,
In the beginning I was overwhelmed with the subject, and subsequently failed my mid-semester exam because I tried to study by the enormous (and confusing) textbook. I have just read that you need to obtain atleast 40% in both exams to pass the subject. What if you didnt get 40%, is there any chance one could resit the exam? Thankyou
Answer - I suggest you to consult Professor Hogarth (Room 1.24 E1N).
Question Is it possible to still pass this subject without passing the Mid Semester Exam? Or do you only have to get 50% overall to pass the subject?
Answer - Check this with Professor Hogarth please.
Question Will the end semester exam be based on the weekly problem sheets?
Answer - Yes, it will.
Question Is this exam going to be similar to the last one... in that the questions come from the tute sheets????
Answer - Yes, it is. Many questions are from weekly tute sheets.
Question What tute sheets does it start from? i.e what number did we get up to last term and what numbers is the exam based on??
Answer - Students should study tute sheets one to 12. No questions will be on matrices or determinants.
Question Hiiiiiiiii, Thanks for your help this semester, it was great! Hopefully most of us will pass. Good luck in the future! CHEERS!
Answer - You welcome.
Question - Will our End of Semester Exam results be posted on this site?
Answer - I don't think so.
