Reception Recap: Our Second Annual Retiree’s Reception was held May 6, 2006 at 7 p.m. in the Executive Dining Room of the Z-6 Building on campus. Several current administrators and faculty, and many retired faculty and staff, attended to pay tribute to the current group of retirees. The food and drink were excellent and everybody seemed to have a great time. A few guests were dressed in formal attire as their evening plans also included the Annual Magnolia Ball. We will avoid this conflict next year with our Third Annual Retired Faculty/Staff Reunion scheduled for July 14, 2007, perhaps in the new Campus Center building, nearing completion right now. Special thanks to Anne Richards and Martha Ann Saunders for their excellent work on this year’s Retiree Tribute booklet, to Andy Leavitt and his staff for their logistical and financial support for the reception, and to all those retirees who attended our planning meetings and shared their ideas with us.
Retiree Medallions: The Office of Development and Alumni Relations and the Association of Retired Faculty & Staff are making available, free of charge, the special medallions to all faculty and staff who have retired from UWG. These are the new and improved versions of the medallions that were given out most recently at the 2006 retirement reception. These 
represent a higher quality and more refined iteration of our first year medallion given out in 2005. The medallion is bronze with the university logo on the obverse and the engraving on the reverse, and hangs from a ribbon. The engraving shows your name, department, and years of service. It will be available to all who did not receive one of these at the 2006 reception (or did not receive one in the mail). So, if you did not receive one of these newer medallions, and you would like one as a memento of all your years of service to UWG, we have a procedure in place. Simply contact Dale Duffey at (678) 839-6582 or dduffey@westga.edu and give her your name as you would like it to appear engraved on the reverse side of the medallion, your former department or division, and your years of service. She will take it from there and will place your order and notify you when it comes in. Because we will do a group order with the engraver, please place your order no later than September 1, 2006.
4th of July Parade: You and your family are invited to ride the University of West Georgia's float in the Carrollton Peoples' Parade to be held on July 4, 2006. The theme this year will be the Centennial. The line up is on HWY 27 down from Dairy Queen and begins at 9:30am. The parade begins at 10 a.m. and we will give a FREE T-Shirt to the first 100 participants! If you really want to relive high school, we need lots of help with float pomping! We will pomp the float starting at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, June 30, 2006 at Facilities Maintenance over by Z-6. We will have pizza, drinks and a lot of fun. It should take a few hours if we have about 40 people. PBS and NPR Fundraising Volunteers Needed: As part of the UWG Centennial, the University is undertaking some service projects. Two of them include assisting with the fund-raising for Public Broadcasting System (television) and National Public Radio. The PBS fund-raiser will be non-live and will take place on Saturday, August 5th. The date of the October fund-raiser is not yet set. All in all, we'll need 24 folks to go into Atlanta to spend about 5 hours in answering phones. PBS provides a meal and some training. We already have 8 folks committed to going, but we’re hoping some of our UWG retirees might want to participate as well. Centennial Events: Plans for the UWG Centennial continue and the official theme (one suggested by the membership of ARFS) is “From Rural Roots to 
Global Reach: Celebrating a Century of Success.” An official logo has been adopted, designed by Matthew Clay. There will be an invitation-only, black tie kick-off gala on the evening of Friday, August 18th to be held in the brand new Campus Center building. The official Grand Opening of the new building will be on August 11th with the ceremony running from 4:00-5:00 p.m., food from 5:00-7:00 p.m. and the building open house/guided tours/band performances/equipment demonstrations lasting until 8:00 p.m.
ARFS Listserv reminder: We have our ARFS listserv up and running now and would like all of you with e-mail accounts to consider signing up for membership on this listserv. We now have 52 members. We can contact you more easily and more quickly, and you will be able to post your ideas and responses to messages for all of us to read as well. It is just like the All-Faculty and All-Staff listservs with which you may be familiar.
