Mission Statement & Department Goals

The Department of Art seeks to provide undergraduate and graduate students with opportunities for intellectual, creative, personal, and technical development through quality teaching, scholarly inquiry, creative endeavor, and service for the public good. As such the department’s mission is clearly part of and supports the overall institutional missions of the College of Arts and Sciences, the University of West Georgia and the University System of Georgia.

Scholarship Information


Each spring the Department of Art hosts a Student Scholarship Competition.  During this competition the Department of Art awards financial aid based upon the review of applicants' portfolios.  Cash awards are granted to students who display strong work and potential. Incoming freshmen are eligible to apply.

In addition, the following scholarships are available to art majors and have specific requirements such as areas of study and grade point average:

  1. Betty Andre Memorial Scholarship
  2. Cooper Bell Memorial Scholarship
  3. Marianne Bobick Memorial Scholarship
  4. Joyce Entrekin Harris Scholarship
  5. Mittie Brooks Johnson Memorial Scholarship
  6. Bessie Curran Kepp Scholarship
  7. Grace Richards Memorial Scholarship
  8. Roush Family Scholarship
  9. Helen Hunt Whatley Scholarship
  10. David Dugan, Jr. Art Scholarship

Scholarship applications are due March 1, 2013. Click here to download the scholarship application form.

Portfolio submissions are required of all applicants for departmental scholarships and awards. Funding is also available to purchase student art work at the Annual Art Student Show. These works become part of the permanent collection of the Department of Art and are placed in public areas on campus. Other departments on campus purchase student work as well.  The College of Education, School of Business, the Offices of the President and Vice President, and others have purchased work in the past. In addition, Art majors are eligible for all grants and scholarships offered by University of West Georgia.

Incoming Freshmen and Transfer Students

The Department of Art at the University of West Georgia provides an education in visual art that embraces traditional and contemporary art making and its appreciation. The department currently has approximately 300+ art majors from the west Georgia region, the metropolitan Atlanta area, and the broader state of Georgia.
