About the Visual Resources Center

Located in the Department of Art, the Visual Resources Center holds an extensive collection of 40,000 digital images and 50,000 slides, encompassing painting, sculpture, architecture, and photography across a broad range of cultures, styles, and time periods.  Holdings also include over 500 DVDs and videos.

The library supports UWG Department of Art faculty and those students enrolled in Art classes.

 Services for Faculty

Faculty Image Orders and Scanning

Image Orders: Faculty may request assistance locating digital images for classes or research. Inquiries may be made either in person during library hours or by email.

Scanning: Please bring scanning requests to the library and fill out an image order form. For scanning requests of ten or fewer images, the library tries provide a 24-hour turnaround time.

Student Viewing Area for Films

For faculty who would like students to watch films outside of class, the library provides a viewing area. Make arrangements beforehand for students to come during library hours.

Copyright  Policy

All use of material by faculty and students is subject to the University System of Georgia’s Copyright Policy: http://www.usg.edu/copyright. The Visual Resource Library expects that any images provided will be used for classroom use and study, in accordance with the U.S. 1976 Copyright Law: http://www.copyright.gov/title17. If stored online, images must be in a password-protected environment, and be made available for viewing to students enrolled in a specific class.

Images for Educational Use: The following list contains resources for locating public domain and copyrighted images that are available for educational non-for-profit use.  Before using any images, make sure to review attribution requirements and all other written terms of the author, photographer, and/or website owner.

ARTstor A digital library of 700,000 images available to UWG faculty and students through Ingram Library. Coverage: Broad.

CAMIO (Catalog of Art Museum Images Online) High quality images from museums around the world, available to UWG faculty and students through Ingram Library. Coverage: Broad.

Creative Commons Search Simultaneously searches a variety of services offering images licensed for educational use. Coverage: Broad.

  • Wikimedia Commons Searches for  Wikipedia images that are licensed under Creative Commons. Coverage: Broad.

  • Flickr Advanced Search in Creative Commons Limit your search to Flickr the Commons by selecting the Creative Commons check box. Searches for flickr images that are licensed under Creative Commons. Coverage: Broad. Strengths: Architecture. High resolution images available.

World Images California State University. Coverage: Broad. Strengths: Architecture, archeology, sculpture.

Web Gallery of Art Coverage: Painting and sculpture from eleventh to mid-nineteenth centuries.

Library of Congress, American Memory Collection of historical images, architecture, maps, etc., from major archives in the United States.

Images for Licensing

Documentary Films

Films on Demand Includes films from Films for the Humanities & Sciences and Cambridge Educational. Available to UWG faculty and students through Ingram Library. From off-campus, enter the library password and then create a user account upon first access. Afterward, login with that account.

Annenberg Media, Learner.org Documentary films made through support from the Annenberg Foundation. Features Art of the Western World series.
