ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

PROGRAM:
The Department of Art at the University of West Georgia is seeking to
fill a unique full-time, tenure-track position in Photography/Graphic
Design beginning in August 2010.  The position includes teaching
courses in graphic design, photography, and web design. The UWG
Department of Art currently consists of 13 full-time faculty, is  NASAD
accredited and offers B.A. or B.F.A. degrees. The Department  operates on a philosophy of vigorous cross-disciplinary practice  between traditional and non-traditional media with the goal of  creating graduates who are well-rounded artists with a thorough  understanding of the inter-relatedness of all artistic approaches.  Conceptual as well as practical business practices are emphasized  within the Photography and Graphic Design areas. There are currently  400 majors in the Department of Art, and approximately 150 of those  are either Photography or Graphic Design majors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The ideal candidate is a graphic designer and/or photographer with
professional experience and a thorough knowledge of typography,
traditional and digital photography, competency with Macintosh and PC platforms and creative software applications for both interactive and print communications. The candidate ideally possesses cross- functional skills of interactive/web and traditional design  principles; excellent communication and problem-solving skills; and  is involved in creative engagement in design research. Industry  experience strongly desirable.

We are seeking an educator who will encourage conceptual and  aesthetic innovation through process development in a liberal arts  environment, while teaching students about practical client and  industry needs. The candidate will have expertise on the Macintosh  platform and also in using the current Adobe Creative Suite, iLife  and Web Design applications. The successful candidate must be  comfortable in a collaborative faculty environment and be a collegial  member of a cohesive and fast-growing department. The position  includes advising students, contributing to the internship program  and promoting the department at all levels.

REQUIRED:
M.F.A. in Graphic Design, Photography or Web Design
Advanced experience with Macintosh OS
Expertise with Adobe Creative Suite, Apple iLife, Web Design software
Evidence of typographic, photographic and design proficiency
Evidence of the potential for teaching effectiveness
Evidence of strong written and oral communication skills

PREFERRED:
Evidence of professional experience in web and print design
Substantive record of teaching visual communications at the
university/college level
Knowledge of time-based media
