B.S. DEGREE WITH A MAJOR IN BIOLOGY (General)
(This major is recommended for students who plan to enter graduate programs in the
biological sciences and for those who plan to enter biology-related jobs. It is not
designed for preparation for medical, dental, veterinary, or other professional schools.
Students with these interests should pursue the B.A. in Biology.)
Core Areas A, B, C, D, & E (42 hours)
MATH 1113 required under Area A
Two lab sciences required under Area D which may not overlap in course number or content
with courses taken elsewhere in the degree program.
Due to the stringent requirements for admission to many graduate schools, students
are urged to consult advisors in choosing elective courses in the core curriculum and
major.

1Subtopic Biology Courses
For both the B.A. and the B.S. degrees in biology, certain upper-division
sub-discipline areas of biology are required in the curriculum. The information below
should assist students in identifying specific courses that meet these sub-discipline
requirements. The second number in the four-number system for the courses indicates the
most appropriate sub-discipline for that course. For instance, a procaryotic biology
course would have a "3" in the second position (i.e., X3XX would designate a
procaryotic course), however, some courses address more than one discipline.
Sub-Discipline Requirements
Eucaryotic Biology: Any course with a X2XX number, AND BIOL 3426
Procaryotic Biology: Any course with a X3XX number
Behavioral/Ecological Biology: Any course with a X4XX number, AND BIOL 4321
Physiological Biology: Any course with a X5XX number, AND BIOL 4315
Genetic Biology: Any course with a X6XX number, AND BIOL 4315
Clinical Biology: Any course with a X7XX number, AND BIOL 4325

- Students are strongly advised to use either PHYS 1111/1112 OR GEOL 1121(L)/1122(L)
to meet the core science requirement.
- PLEASE NOTE - BIOL 2134 and 2135 are both offered in the Fall and Spring
semesters. These courses may be taken in any order, but students should always enroll in
BIOL 2130 when taking BIOL 2134, and in BIOL 2120 when taking BIOL 2135 as these courses
are linked for activities.
All Students must meet the Writing Across the Curriculum requirement for the degree,
currently at least two 3000/4000 level WAC courses. At least two upper division biology
courses for WAC credit will be offered each semester.
Please keep in mind that not all courses are offered every semester. As a result, it
may be necessary to deviate from the Junior/Senior year schedule suggested above. See your
advisor if you have questions about long range course offerings.
