Class:  English 1102

Assignment:  Essay #2: Literary Textual Analysis (To Kill A Mockingbird)

·         Assignment Due Date: See Syllabus

·         Submission Guidelines: Essays should be submitted in hard copy form no later than 4 pm on the essay due date; any essays submitted after that time are subject to penalty according to the late work policy (see syllabus)

·         Format: MLA Format (information on correct MLA format can be found in AWR; also visit me during office hours with questions and/or make an appointment with a WC tutor); Note:  essays not submitted in correct MLA Format will receive an automatic 1/2 letter grade reduction of the final essay grade.

·         Length:  3-4 pages (essays should include at least one paragraph in the introductory section, a minimum of 4 body paragraphs, and at least one paragraph in the concluding section); essays that do not meet the length requirement will automatically receive a "D" for failing to clearly respond to the assignment (see grading rubric)

·         The essay MUST include specific textual examples from the primary text (print version); you must also incorporate a minimum of two secondary sources where you deem them necessary to support your argument (we will discuss effective secondary source selection/ incorporation in class; note, however, you may NOT use the film version as one of your secondary sources); essays that do not meet these requirements will automatically receive a failing grade on the assignment (see grading rubric)

Note: Please take each part of the assignment seriously as each smaller assignment will build on each other and will culminate into your finished draft.  Take your time as you choose your sign, raise your driving theoretical questions (remember:  according to Semiotic Theory, “answers aren’t the basis for analytical thinking: questions are”), compose your analytical responses, draft, revise, and proofread.  Pay attention to both the larger issues (thesis construction, topic sentences, full paragraph development, inclusion of specific  examples, etc.) as well as the smaller issues (transitions, correct grammar usage, and MLA formatting).   Use the examples we’ve reviewed in class to help you.   Remember: I am available during office hours to assist you with this process, and the Writing Center is available and staffed with seasoned faculty tutors who can also assist you with any stage of the writing process.

**Writing Center Requirement:  Students are required to visit the UWC a minimum of one time during the writing process of essay #2.  Students may choose between an individual tutorial, individual computer work, or small group tutorials.  Once the student has completed his/her UWC requirement, the student is to request a verification form from the UWC  and staple that verification form to the final hard copy of the essay that is to be submitted on the essay due date posted on the online syllabus. Failure to meet this requirement will result in a 1/2 letter grade reduction of the final essay grade.  (UWC days/hours are posted on their website--the link to the website can be found  on the online syllabus)
