Case Presentations and Analysis

COMM 2254-Media Ethics

Spring 2001

Description: For this project (which is worth 100 points), there will be 6 team members per group. Your team will be assigned a media ethics case from the recent Media Leaders Forum series. The goal of the project is to identify the ethical issues raised by your case and critically analyze the issues ethically from various perspectives. You will want to demonstrate your mastery of ethical principles and analysis. The SAD Model of Reasoning would be a valid approach to this project. There are other analytical methods that would be appropriate also if you wanted to do some additional reading. If so, let me know. You’ll want to address not only the case, but also the responses of the media professionals who discuss the case studies. You might deconstruct and critically analyze some of these responses in the overall analysis and discussion of your case. For example, you might use some of these comments as examples of certain ethical perspectives or theories.

Written Analysis: Your written analysis should be typed or word processed and 5-7 pages (maximum) in length. Please use a reasonable font and type size (should not exceed 12 pt.). Please write in an academic and scholarly style. You should use an appropriate citation style like MLA or APA, for example, for any references. You should apply and use appropriate and relevant material from the texts and other assigned materials (i.e., ethical emphases, theories, principles, etc.). You may perform additional research if you choose, although that is not necessary to achieve a good grade. Superior work will of course be rewarded – additional research or not. The chapters in your texts have additional sources listed that might be of interest. Each member of the team needs to turn in an individual written analysis consisting of his or her own original work. The written analysis is due on the date of your team’s presentation.

Presentation: Your team will present on 4/17 (Tuesday). Your team will have approximately 25 minutes to present. The goal of the presentation is to present to the class the case and key ethical issues and conduct a discussion and ethical analysis. Your team should build some open discussion into the presentation, but you will want to be careful of the time. Your team will want to make sure that all members participate in the presentation and discussion. The organization and format of the presentation and discussion is up to your team. One suggestion would be to have one member moderate, one member each take a section of the SAD model (the analysis section can be divided into four parts), and then one member provide an overall analysis and conclude in some fashion. This is just a rough idea, and your team should derive a format that will work best for your case and team. You may use A/V resources if you choose subject to the technical capability of the classroom (PowerPoint, Internet, VHS, etc.). If you need something not available in the room, let me know, and I’ll see what I can do.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Good luck on the project!

*Note: I wish to acknowledge and thank Dr. Michael Hoefges for allowing me to use the basics of this assignment in this course.
