Lab #2-Tape Editing
COMM 3351-Radio Program Production
Spring 2001
Please follow these instructions carefully.
In this lab you are going to utilize the news actuality shown on pages 128 -129 of
Mayor Hazard speaking about the new highway. Once you edit out the unwanted parts, you are
going to dub the sound bite to cassette and integrate it into a headline newscast. You are
going to wrap music around your newscast by using the cueing and production techniques
learned in Lab #1.
For this lab you will be using the recorded interview with Mayor Hazard. You will dub
this interview onto a work tape (reel to reel) and then edit out the mistake. You will
need your reel to reel tape, CD's or records, a news cassette, and a commercial cart.
Splice two seconds of leader tape (7 ½ inches) at the beginning of your new lab
segment. This means go to the end of your first lab recording and mark the tape with the
grease pencil. Place the tape in the editing block and cut the tape on a diagonal. Then
cut off two seconds of leader tape from the leader tape reel and splice it to the ends of
your tape. Remember to cut the leader tape on a diagonal, too, and place the splicing tape
in the center of the two tapes that are butted together. Re-rack your tape and continue.
Set tone levels to 100% on the board, open reel machines, and cart machine (some cart
machines require the cart to be in the machine before you can set a level). Dub the
cassette copy of the interview of Mayor Hazard onto the work tape.
Look at pages 128 in Modern Radio Production. Edit your actuality (sound bite)
from the longer interview as described in the textbook. Once you have the interview
edited, dub the sound bite back to a cassette.
Cue up a cut on CD #1 or on turntable (TT) #2, recue the cassette (which now has the
edited sound bite) and when ready start the open reel tape machine with your tape on it.
Record the standard preopen and slate it: "(__YOUR NAME __) LAB 2 NEWS INSERT
EDIT", then play the cut on CD#1 or TT#1. While the music is playing, cue up a cut on
TT / CD#2 that has several seconds of instrumental music before singing starts.
When the cut ends on CD/ TT 2, open your mic and read the news copy including the
lead-in open and ending close to the newscast. Play the actuality at the appropriate place
within story 2. Cut the mic during the actuality so that you can hear the actuality play
through the monitor speakers. Open the mic at the appropriate time and finish story 2 and
the rest of the newscast.
While you are reading your ending close, For WWGC News, I'm (your name). And now back
to Carrolltons best music," start TT or CD 2 under the closing and pot it up
full as you finish reading. Cue up another song on TT/CD#1 and cue up the commercial cart.
As TT/CD#2 ends, play the commercial and then segue to TT/CD#1. Play selection and fade
out.
Rewind the tape with heads out.
Label the leader tape and box (dont write too large) with your name and project
and date. Turn in your tape by February 22, 2001. This lab is worth 25 points.
Check pages 129-133 in your text for a step-by-step review of the editing process.
