Lab #3-Commercial Editing

COMM 3351-Radio Program Production

Spring 2001

Please follow these instructions carefully.

In Lab 3 you are going to build on the experiences of Labs 1 and 2 to create a radio commercial. Follow the directions carefully. Don't get discouraged if you have to re-edit your music bed or rerecord your spot a few times. Editing music and integrating sound sources together are skills that require some practice and the more often you practice, the more proficient you will become.

Sign out at least two hours for this lab. Use the reel to reel work tape for editing the music on this project. Use the cassette work tape for recording the announcer's script. Bulk erase both work tapes before you start this lab. Record the commercial onto your reel to reel tape. Splice two seconds of leader tape at the beginning of the commercial before the standard preopen.

Record the assigned instrumental cut onto the work tape after your standard preopen (10 sec. of silence, 10 sec of test tone @ 100% modulation, voice slate, 10 second of silence).

Listen carefully to the song several times. With a stopwatch, the CD timer, or the timer in the lab, time segments that you think would edit well together (remember that your edits should sound as seamless as possible). Add the times of your segments together. Do they total 30 seconds? Are you short or long on time? If your timed segments seem short, can you find different song segments that will give you a closer timing? If your segments are too long, can you locate new segments to come out to the proper time?

Following the editing instructions in Chapter 6, carefully mark the edit points on your tape and then edit the musical selection together at your edit marks. (Use the diagonal splice on your edit block). Is the bed now 30 seconds within one-half second? Does the music flow or are edits inconsistent with the structure of the music? Rerecord and re-edit the song until you are satisfied with the results. (Take the work tape off of the recorder and put it on the Reel to Reel #1)

Once you are satisfied with your edited music bed, set a voice level. Using the cassette work tape, record the copy below. Note the script uses numbers at the right for identification and timing purposes. (If you need to edit or change the script locating the changes are easier with this script format.) Rewind the voice track and time your reading. It should be about 20 to 22 seconds long.

Practice mixing the voice track over the music bed by playing back both tapes simultaneously. Using the time difference between your reading and the 30 second music bed, calculate how much music you can leave up full before you need to fade the music under the recorded copy (script) and how much can you fade up after the copy. (If your reading is too long and you can't read faster, you'll have to find a word or two to cut out the of the copy. After editing the copy, rerecord it and repeat step six again.)

Record the music and voice track together onto your reel to reel tape. Pay attention to the mix level so that the music is neither too loud nor too soft when mixed under the voice. (Hint: don't listen to the playback mix under headphones. Use the monitor speakers). Try to keep the voice level as close to the 100% modulation limit as possible.

Label the leader tape and box (don’t write too large) with your name and project and date. Turn in your tape by March 8, 2001. This lab is worth 25 points.

Check pages 129-133 in your text for a step-by-step review of the editing process.
