Listening Assignment #1

COMM 3351-Radio Program Production

Spring 2001

 

Please follow these instructions carefully.

Within the next week (1/16-1/23) you are going to listen to the first hour of National Public Radio’s "All Things Considered" and analyze the program structure and format of the show. The program (typically) begins at 4:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. Find the call letters and frequency for the station in your area from the list below.

WUGA-FM Athens           91.7 M-F 4 p.m.-6 p.m.

WUGA-FM Athens           91.7 M-F 7 p.m.-8 p.m.

WABE-FM Atlanta          90.1 M-F 4 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

WJSP-FM Atlanta          88.1 M-F 4 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

WACG-FM Augusta         90.7 M-F 4 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

WWIO-FM Brunswick 89.1 M-F 5 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

WWGC-FM Carrolton 90.7 M-F 4 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

WTJB-FM Columbus 91.7 M-F 5 p.m.-7 p.m.

WPPR-FM Demorest 88.3 M-F 4 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

WJWV-FM Fort Gaines 90.9 M-F 4 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

WDCO-FM Macon        89.7 M-F 4 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

As you listen to the program, please keep a log of the things that you hear and then put together a *type-written, two-page paper describing the following aspects of the program: (*use proper grammar and spelling and do not exceed two pages)

Did the show use music as theme, stingers or bumpers between segments?

How many announcers did the show use? How were the announcers used? Describe their voice quality, presentation, etc.

How many different segments were incorporated into the broadcast? Was a standard time used for each segment or did the time differ for each segment?

How would you describe the style of the show? Was the show fairly upbeat or was the style easy going? Did the focus of the show vary from segment to segment or was it consistent?

Did the show sound as though it were a seamless program or did the show sound like it was pieced together?

Who do you think is the intended audience for this program?

What segments did you find interesting? Why did those segments appeal to you? Would you listen to this show again? If so, why? If not, why? Would you listen regularly?

This analysis is to be handed in by the beginning of class on Thursday, 1/23/01.
