Text:  Excursions in Modern Mathematics, 6th Edition

The deadline to drop to this class without penalty (receive a W) October 8th.

Courses Description:

 This course is an alternative in Area A of the Core Curriculum and is a general overview of mathematical concept used in quantitative reasoning and not intended to supply sufficient algebraic background for students who intend to take Pre-calculus or the Calculus sequence for science majors. This course places quantitative skills and reasoning in the context of experiences that students may likely encounter. It emphasizes processing information in context from a variety of representations, understanding of both the information and the processing, and understanding which conclusions can be reasonably determined.

Grading Method

Your grade will come from three sources.  The first is the online quizzes available at the publisher's website (30%).  Make sure you set up the PROFILE in your account so that the results is sent to my email.  The second is the Mini Excursions (40%).   The third is your final EXAM (30%).  The final average will be the sum of these percentages.  Grades are assigned on a 10% point scale format:

*      90% < A < 100%

*      80% < B < 89%

*      70% < C < 79%

 How to Succeed in this Math class:

  1. Come to every class.
  2. Ask questions, respectfully, when you don’t understand.  I will gladly restate or rephrase the instruction.
  3. Study by working through the exercises I suggest to you in class.
  4. Take advantage of the office hours or the Math Tutor lab offered by this department.
  5. Apply yourself in the beginning so you don’t have to make up ground later.
