The ability of cells to communicate to each other is critical for the growth and function of essentially all organisms. Extracellular signal molecules initiate this communication by binding to protein receptors on the surface of cells. The signal is than transmitted to intracellular targets via protein-protein interactions, low-molecular weight mediators, and lipids. My laboratory is synthesizing derivatives of the lipid sphingosine, to find way to regulate signaling pathways. Synthetic analogs of this compound may lead to new strategies for disease prevention and treatment, particularly for certain forms of cancer. |
