Required Textbook: “Organic Chemistry” by John McMurry, 6th Edition, the Study Guide and Solutions Manual.
Highly Recommended:
“Preparing for Your
Class material: Lectures notes (slides).
Course Objective: The goal of this course is for you to acquire the fundamental principles and concepts of Organic Chemistry and to use them to solve Organic Chemistry problems. You will utilize and build on these concepts in CHEM 3422 (Organic Chemistry, part 2).
Tests schedule:
1st exam: Chapters 1, 2: Thursday August 31st,
2nd exam: Chapters 3, 4, 5: Thursday September 28th,
3rd exam: chapters 6, 7, 8: Tuesday October 31st,
4th exam: Chapters 9, 10, 11: Thursday November 30th.
Final: Thursday December, 7th,
Grades: A: 90-100; B: 80-89; C: 70-79; D: 60-69; F: 0-59.
Final Grade: The final grade will be based on the average from the final exam and the test scores, the homework assignments and the quizzes.
Final grade = exam average
No make up tests will be given. If you miss a test for any reason (illness, death in the family, bad weather conditions, legal events, car problem and so on…), the test score of the exam you missed will be replaced by the score you obtained on the final exam. There will be no exception to this policy. If you happen to miss more than one exam, the final exam score will replace for the grade of each exam you missed. No extra time will be given if you arrive late for a test for any reason.
Each test is an integrative examination built on previous knowledge acquired in the class. Be sure to understand and know everything you have learned in the class since the beginning of the semester since you may be tested on it at any time.
All
examinations will be under the form of multiple choice questions, where no
partial credit can be given. The final examination will be an integrative
examination covering the knowledge acquired all along the semester. If there is
a conflict with the final examination time, you must provide me the written
authorization from the Dean of Arts & Sciences to move your final
examination time. This note should be delivered to me at least two weeks prior
to the scheduled final examination time.
Study Skills, suggested problems:
For each exam,
there is a list of exercises, from your manual (so that you have the solution)
that you are supposed to study on your own. They will not be collected but it
is strongly suggested that you attempt to do them since they will be part of
the exams. Some homework problems will be collected; some of these questions will
also be used for the exams. The exercises from the list of exercises from your
book and the homework are not restricted, this is the minimum you should do to
pass this class, so for extra practice, it is expected that you will attempt to
solve more problems from your book. It is highly recommended that you use the
Study Guide and Solutions Manual. The best way to make sure that you have
understood the material covered in class is to work through the appropriate
problems on a regular basis (every day).
Successfully complete written and oral assignments and examinations.
Understand the bases for organic chemistry.
Understand the structure/property relationships.
Know nomenclature of organic compounds.
Understand the concepts of mechanisms in organic chemistry, be able to identify and write mechanisms for organic chemical reactions.
Be able to design a simple organic synthesis based on the reactions learned in class.
Policies
– Academic misconduct
Cheating on a homework assignment or a quiz for the
first time will result in a score of zero for that particular paper or quiz. If
the student is caught cheating a second time, his grade for the entire course
will be an F. Furthermore, if a student is caught cheating on an examination,
he will automatically receive a grade F for the entire course and I will inform
the vice-president of academic affairs as well as the dean of the college. Any
infraction will be taken before the disciplinary committee and played out to
the fullest extent. Cheating will never be tolerated.
Attendance is mandatory to achieve success in such a course and will be monitored: at every session, by signing the attendance sheet. In order to be considered for a curve for a particular test (if a curve is given for that test) you must demonstrate that you have attended all my classes (by signing the attendance sheet for every class) prior to that test. No more than one unexcused absence will be allowed. Excused absences must be in writing accompanied by documented proof (such as a doctor’s note).
Unsocial behavior such as talking during class or being disruptive will not be tolerated and you will be asked to leave the class and your attendance for that day will be cancelled.
Also,
the use of cell phones or laptops is prohibited during the sessions at any time.
Unless specific medical conditions, students will not be allowed to leave the
classroom at any time but especially while taking an examination. Leaving the
classroom during class time will result in losing the attendance for that day
and during an examination it will be considered as being finished with the
examination.
