Undergraduate Research:
I have developed close connections between teaching and research. I have directed numerous student researches in mineralogy, geochemistry, environmental geochemistry, topaz rhyolites, watershed assessment, water quality, lead pollution of drinking water and paint, arsenic leaching from pressure treated wood, experimental mineralogy, and X-ray diffraction.

Introduction to Geospatial Analysis for Research and Classroom Applications at Geospatial Applications Research Center, State University of West Georgia
I have directed over 210 individualized undergraduate research projects from 1982 to 2004. Many of these research projects have resulted in student abstracts published by the Georgia Academy of Science (GAS); eight of which won the "Best Undergraduate Paper" awards. Thirteen student‑co-authored papers have been published by national and regional journals. I have now had 82 abstracts published by my students at GAS and Geological Society of America (GSA) in the past 22 years, and the number of students is much higher because of the multiple authors on many abstracts. From 1984 to 1999 my students published 32 abstracts in the Georgia Journal of Science. From 2000 to 2003 my students have presented 11 papers at the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Academy of Science, presented 21 posters at the Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Section of the Geological Society of America, and from 1999 to 2003 presented 18 posters at the Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America.

Organized the UTWG: The Upper Tallapoosa Watershed Group is a diverse group of concerned citizens that are interested in protecting, preserving and using the Tallapoosa watershed in Haralson and Carroll Counties. Protection, preservation and usage of the Tallapoosa River need not be exclusive of each other.
1. Meetings:
A. Organizational meeting at Tanner State Park on June 30, 1999. Presented educational displays on water quality problems in west Georgia. Chaired first discussion. (70 attended the educational part from 3-6 and 28 attended the organizational meeting)
B. Organized meeting (July 28, 1999) at Lake Park west of Breman. Presented educational displays on surface water supply problems of Carroll and Haralson Counties. Chaired discussion on the need for a reserve on the Tallapoosa River in Haralson County. Write of slate of officers/board/advisors and charter. The Board of Directors approved both.
C. The UTWG toured the City of Carrollton water treatment plant, wastewater treatment plant, and spray field on August 25, 1999.
D. Organized educational displays and panel of experts for a meeting of the UTWG at the Department of Geology’s crystalline rock hydrogeology research station on September 29, 1999.
E. Organized river cleanup with the Georgia Adopt A Stream Program of the Tallapoosa River in Haralson County on October 16, 1999.
F. Presented the UTWG to the conservation committee of the Woman’s Civic Club on November 1, 1999.
G. Organized river cleanup of the Little Tallapoosa River in Carrollton (November 16, 1999).
H. Wrote a year in review report and mailed copies to all members.
I. For 2000 organized four river cleanups with the Georgia Rivers Alive Organization.

O. Two grant proposals have been submitted by the Upper Tallapoosa Watershed Group (Randa Harris and CLH) for the improvement of the 50 acres on the northern edge of the UWG campus. This land is mostly the floodplain of the Little Tallapoosa River. We have submitted one grant to Five-Star for $7,000. It is “Floodplain and riparian restoration: the development of an outdoor learning center and hydrology research station at the State University of West Georgia, Carrollton, Georgia.” This grant was not funded. The second grant for $10,000 was submitted to the Community Foundation of West Georgia, it is “Little Tallapoosa River Learning Corridor.” This grant submitted with Randa Harris was funded for $4,250.
2. Other activities:
A. Picked first slate of officers, advisors, and board members.
B. Wrote the groups charter.
C. Filed for and obtained 501c tax status.
D. Wrote Letters to the Editor that resulted in their publication in four local newspapers.
E. Have continued to help keep the UTWG well covered in the local press.
