Customer Service Employee Recognition Awards Announced

(L-R) Jim Sutherland, vice president for the Division of Business and Finance congratulated Tim McWhorter, project superintendent for Campus Planning and Development, Jessica Lane, accounting clerk for Bursar’s Office, and Teresa Traylor, business manager II for Business and Auxiliary Services, for being named the recipients of the Customer Service Employee Recognition Award in the third quarter of 2007. The honor was created in response to the Governor and Chancellor’s Customer Service Initiative and recognizes employees that demonstrate superior service performance.

GMTA Names Mann Teacher of the Year

george mannDr. George Mann, retired professor of music, was recently selected as Teacher of the Year by the Georgia Music Teachers Association. The award is presented annually to a GMTA member in recognition of lifetime achievement in excellence in teaching, professional activity and service to the community as a music teacher. 

Mann has performed widely as a solo recitalist, accompanist and chamber music participant, and he is listed in The Piano in Concert, a comprehensive work including pianists and their concert programs from the time of Liszt to the late 20th century. He taught at West Georgia for almost 28 years and retired in 2002.

kudosDr. Jim Burton, professor of real estate and marketing, and Dr. Brian Rutherford of Purdue University had their article “Real Estate Marketing – An Experiential Learning Approach” recently published in The Journal of Real Estate Practice and Education (Volume 10, Number 2, 2007).
 
kudosDr. Robert Powell, chair and professor of physics, received an appointment to a three-year term on the National Science Education for the Public Committee of the American Association of Physics Teachers.

kudosDr. Jack (Yujie) Wei, assistant professor of marketing, has had his manuscript, “Global Brand Equity Model: Combining Customer-Based With Product-Market Outcomes Approach,” accepted for publication in the Spring/Summer issue of the Journal of Product and Brand Management.

kudosDr. William Lankford, professor of management, and Dr. Brad Prince, assistant professor of management, presented their article “The Strategic Oasis” at the International Academy of Business and Economics in Las Vegas.

kudosDr. Roger Johns, lecturer of management, and Dr. Jorge Gaytan, associate professor of management, had their article “Preliminary Observations from a Test of the Matrix Method of Teaching Employment Discrimination Law” presented at the 53rd Meeting of the Southeastern Academy of Legal Studies in Business in Memphis. 

kudosStudents from the Department of Computer Sciences recently participated in a regional programming contest at the annual meeting of the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges: Southeastern Region. Dr. Jeff Matocha, associate professor of computer sciences, coached the two teams that participated in the event. Out of 29 teams, December graduates Chris Strickland and Ryan Petrello placed fifth, and Joseph Powell, Rickey Burgey and Travis Tynes placed 14th. The competition included many prestigious schools such as Furman University, Mercer University, Spelman College and the Citadel.
