Spring Enrollment Breaks Record

The University of West Georgia announced a record enrollment for its spring semester with 10,208 students, an increase of 731 students over the spring semester in 2007.

Spring enrollment breaks recordScot Lingrell, associate vice president for enrollment management, said the increase shows the determination of university faculty and staff.

“This spring’s enrollment reflects strong increases in all student types including new freshmen, transfers and graduate students as well as continuing students at all levels,” said Lingrell. “The increase is directly related to the hard work that all university employees are doing to meet the retention, progression and graduation targets we have established to support the University System of Georgia’s direction and goals.”

Last fall, UWG passed its enrollment record with a registration of 10,677 students. The official total for enrollment this semester was announced on Feb. 11 by the University System of Georgia.

The Board of Regents predicts that enrollment in the USG will increase by 100,000 students by the year 2020. Preparation for the expected growth in enrollment has already begun with several renovations and new buildings on campus.

Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna, professor of business and president of UWG, said that West Georgia is taking its place in the state as a university destination in the southeast.

“It is a great pleasure to announce and celebrate this milestone in the history of the University of West Georgia,” said Sethna. “This is the first spring semester with enrollment that crossed the 10,000 student mark. Onward and upward, West Georgia!”
