Ensemble Jazzes it Up

Forget Atlanta. Jazz enthusiasts will want to mark their calendar for the UWG Jazz Ensemble's spring concert on Thursday, March 13. Momcat Mombo, Easy Money and a little Thelonious Monk are just a few of the cool jazz selections represented on stage at the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts at the University of West Georgia. The concert is free and the community is invited to attend.

uwg jazz ensembleSponsored by the Department of Music, the ensemble features a fusion of talent on percussion, horn and vocals. Dr. Dan Bakos, professor of music, directs the production and will play on piano. The music begins at 8:15 p.m.

The improv, swing and samba selections include "You've got the have the Blues Sometime" by Tom Kubis, Benny Carter's "Easy Money" and a salsa selection,"Vamos a Bailar," by Doug Beach.

This year's concert also presents vocalist Nandani Persaud singing Monk's "Round Midnight" and "I hear Music" written by Jerome Kern.

Mueller Fuses Grunge, Appalachian Folk

The Department of Music will host a faculty recital featuring Luan Mueller, instructor of clarinet, on Monday, March 10, at 8:15 p.m. in the Kathy Cashen Recital Hall in the Humanities Building. The event is free and the community is invited to attend.

muellerMueller will be accompanied by Peter Mueller, accompanist and acting principal trombone of the Macon Symphony, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra principal bass clarinetist Alcides Rodriguez and percussionist Charles Settle.

Selections for the evening are sure to entice chamber music lovers. The music ranges in style from a clarinet soliloquy for Generation X based on the grunge music of Nirvana and Alice and Chains to an Appalachian folk song.

The final selection hits a cool groove and premieres an arrangement of Eric Ewazen’s “Diamond World,” which was originally written for the Ahn Trio but has been rewritten by Mueller for clarinet, bass clarinet, piano and drum set.
