Construction workers help steady trusses for the Health and Wellness Center, which will open in January 2009. The facility will be approximately 123,000 square feet and will seat up to 7,200 people for stage events.

Construction Update on Campus Shows Everyone is on Schedule

Spring is in the air but more importantly on the UWG campus, the sound of construction is in the air! The Health and Wellness Center is taking shape as the trusses for the arena went in last week.  According to Elsa Pena, campus architect, the building has been put on a fast track in order for occupancy to begin in January 2009.

The Callaway Building addition is 30 percent complete, according to Lynn Agan, director of campus planning and development, and he expects the builder to meet the July material completion date.   MORE

Campus Raises Funds for Friend

Justin ElliorFaculty, staff and students are joining together to help raise funds for an Advanced Academy student who recently was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. Last week, Academy students voted unanimously to donate all of the proceeds from their annual fundraiser, St. Paddy’s Day Café, to the family’s medical expenses and an account has been opened at the Gilmer County Bank for donations.

Commencement Schedule Set

West Georgia will conduct four spring commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 10. The Registrar’s Office estimates that 575 undergraduates and 110 graduate students will walk down the aisle to receive a diploma.

Kudos

The UWG Jazz Percussion Group, under the direction of Dr. Doug Overmier, associate professor and director of bands, was selected to perform at the prestigious Conference of the International Society for Music Educators in Bologna, Italy in July.

Events of Note

Forget Atlanta. Jazz enthusiasts will want to mark their calendar for the UWG Jazz Ensemble's spring concert on Thursday, March 13.

Can Grunge music and Appalachian folk songs get along? The two genres will be asked to do that very thing on Monday, March 10, when Luan Mueller presents a clarinet recital accompanied by several other musicians on horn and percussion.
