"El buzón verde – the green letterbox." A small home in the mountain village of Matapala, Nicaragua, provided a setting for this photo. It stood out from the nearby homes because of the impatiens and placement of the letterbox. "Accion contra el Hambre," or Action Against the Hunger, is an organization founded to help eradicate hunger, malnutrition and disease spread through dirty water. Math Department Hosts National Research Experience
The Department of Mathematics at the University of West Georgia hosted its second national Research Experience for Undergraduates program this summer for eight math majors chosen from universities and colleges throughout the country. MORE
Professors Receive Fulbright Scholarships
Dr. John Bleuel, associate professor of music, received a Fulbright Scholarship to teach at the National Chengchi University in Taipei for the fall semester. MORE
Summer Commencement is August 1
The University of West Georgia summer commencement will be held in the Campus Center Gymnasium at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. Undergraduates from the College of Arts and Sciences will be awarded degrees at the 9 a.m. ceremony. The noon ceremony will feature undergraduates receiving their degrees from the Richards College of Business. At 3 p.m., students earning their degrees from the College of Education and the Graduate School will receive their diploma. MORE
UWG Excels in Water Conservation
UWG has exceeded the state’s mandate for reduction of water consumption despite record enrollment numbers and a continuing drought. The 10-month state mandate on water conservation continues and so does the University of West Georgia’s highly successful water conservation program. MORE
Trip to Bayeux Adds Depth to Studies
During the summer months, most UWG students are content to take a well- deserved break before starting school again in the fall. Others take advantage of the time by studying abroad, like the 10 art students who traveled to Bayeux, France in July. The trip, spearheaded by Dr. Anne Gaquere, lecturer and Art Study Abroad program director, and Kevin Shunn, chair of the Art Department, was a unique opportunity for students to witness firsthand what they typically only see in textbooks.
