University Club Opens Semester
Faculty and staff and retirees have enjoyed the University Club Social and the Club Luncheons since 2002 and the tradition continues on August 22 on Adamson Square at UnCorked, the square’s newest culinary addition.
The long standing tradition of the University Club makes people want to dance through the semester.
The twice-monthly Friday night affair offers faculty and staff a chance to relax and rub elbows with colleagues they may never meet outside of their departments.
President Beheruz Sethna started the club to help boost the social interaction between the faculty and staff and he and other administrators are regular patrons of the club. Average numbers attending usually range between 30 to 50 and if you have not attended, you are missing out.
The UC Committee members plan the events and the menu and usually solicit a few volunteers to help with food preparation at non-restaurant UC socials at the Alumni House.
Active this year in the planning are co-chair Susan Fishman-Armstrong, Waring Lab, Susan Colgate, Advanced Academy, Dr. Walter Todd, Intramurals, Slyvia Shortt, International Programs, Dr. Brent Snow, Academic Affairs, and Dr. Tim Chowns, Geography. The group is still looking for another co-chair and a few more volunteers.
Other UC Friday Nights are planned for Dr. Thomas Foster’s home (the only exception to the Alumni House schedule this semester,) Mia Bella Italian Bistro, The Border, the Little Hawaiian and as always, the Alumni House.
The Little Hawaiian, well known for its seafood and vegetarian fare, is scheduled to reopen on Rome Street in November in the historic building that formerly housed the Rome Street Tavern and Grill. Club members will gladly help open the popular venue.
To welcome faculty and staff to the new academic year and the Friday Night Social, the University Club will pick up the tab for the appetizers at Uncorked and at Dr. Foster’s home.
The gatherings begin at 5 p.m. and usually end after 7 p.m. A donation of $5 is requested for the socials scheduled at the Alumni House.
The calendar for the fall semester is:
August 22 – Uncorked
Be there or be square.
