UWG Hosts Homecoming
Lights! Camera! Action! All the glitz, glamour and stardom of Hollywood will arrive on campus during the University of West Georgia homecoming on Friday, Oct. 17, and Saturday, Oct. 18.
University of West Georgia students enjoy homecoming at last yearís UWG Homecoming Parade. This yearís UWG homecoming celebration is a two-day event filled with reunions, football, entertainment and the popular Presidentís Breakfast.
A “West Georgia Nights Under Hollywood Lights” homecoming will feature a star-studded weekend of receptions, dinners, reunions, tailgating, football and entertainment for alumni of all eras and all alums are welcome to enjoy this time together.
Friday’s activities will roll into action as classmates from the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s reunite for their traditional luncheon at the Food Services Building (Z6). Early registration and a social hour kick off the reunion at 10 a.m. and will be followed by a group photo session at 11:30 a.m. Lunch and a reunion program will begin at noon and will feature the UWG Chamber Singers as entertainment.
Commemorative medallions will be available at the lunch to all alumni who have not previously received one. In addition, alumni from the classes of 1927, 1933, 1938, 1943 and 1948 will be recognized for milestone reunions. The cost is $19 per person.
For the second year, a golf outing is planned for alumni from the ‘60s. The event will be held at Sunset Hills Country Club and tee time is 12:30 p.m. Men and women are invited to participate. The cost is $75 per person and includes range balls, greens fees, cart fees and prizes. To reserve a tee time, contact John Ball ‘70 at 770-834-4372.
Opening night events on Friday evening include the Alumni Awards Presentation Dinner, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the lower level of the Food Services Building, as well as The After Party. Included in the dinner program are the National Alumni Association’s annual meeting and the presentation of awards to outstanding supporters of the association and UWG.
The cost for the event is $20 per person and covers admission to The After Party, which was added to the list of homecoming festivities last year and includes music for dancing and complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beverages.
“Fun after parties typically follow Hollywood award programs, giving guests the opportunity to reconnect and socialize, and we wanted to do the same thing for our alumni,” said committee co-chair, Christina Camp ‘03, ‘07. “It’s the perfect way to end the evening, and at the same time, it gears us up for all the fun things lined up for Saturday.”
Saturday offers a fun-filled slate of activities beginning with the President’s Breakfast on the front lawn of the Alumni House hosted by Dr. Beheruz N. Sethna. This complimentary event grows increasingly popular every year and reservations are strongly encouraged.
All who attend the breakfast are invited to view the Homecoming Parade just one block away at the corner of Maple Street and West Georgia Drive. Lineup of parade floats will begin at 9 a.m. at the Club Fitness parking lot on Maple Street. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and proceed onto Maple Street toward the university and end at the Tyus Hall parking lot on West Georgia Drive.
Following the parade at 11 a.m., the Black Student Alliance will celebrate 40 years of history at a brunch served on the Technology-enhanced Learning Center patio. In the event of rain, the brunch will be held in the TLC lobby. Cost for the brunch is $10 per person and includes an opportunity to purchase BSA annual step show tickets at a discounted rate. “Steppin Out…Lights, Camera, Hollyhood” is scheduled in the HPE Gym in the Campus Center at 7 p.m.
In addition to the brunch at the TLC, a Greek Village Rally will be held on the construction site on Brumbelow Road at 11 a.m. All Greeks, both past and present, are invited to celebrate the construction of the Greek Village, which will open in the fall of 2009.
