Ed Murphy Announces Retirement

For the first time in nearly 15 years, a change is coming atop the University of West Georgia Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. Ed Murphy will retire as the university’s Director of Athletics effective January 31. MORE

Chicago Jazz Ensemble Comes to TCPA

Jazz enthusiasts will be dazzled by the second annual “Live Art at the Townsend Center” event featuring The Chicago Jazz Ensemble starring Jon Faddis on Saturday, Jan. 24. MORE

UWG recently announced the launch of the newly developed Disaster Mental Health website for Georgia, www.georgiadisaster.info. MORE

Peace Corps Becomes Family Affair

UWG has been named as one of the Peace Corps’ top 10 colleges in Georgia that contribute to the number of Corps volunteers. John Stogner, interim Director of Infrastructure, has had a part in that ranking with two sons, both alumni from the university, serving in the Peace Corps, and a daughter considering joining after graduation. A new era began this month with the grand opening of The Coliseum, home to the Department of Health, Physical Education and Sports Studies, and the Wolves basketball and volleyball teams. MORE

• Two new Websites to visit at:

- The Department of Institutional Research and Planning at the University of West Georgia was established in 1967. IRP explores University culture by investigating campus community norms and values. Research findings aid the administration in determining if and to what extent values are in conflict and provide a basis for policy analysis and problem-solving approaches. In the early 1980s, West Georgia was the first University System of Georgia institution to conduct institutional retention studies. Retention studies indicate causes of attrition and analyze retention-attrition behavior as a means for policy analysis, alternative admissions criteria and enrollment planning.

- The University Ombuds office has been created to help faculty, staff and students who have questions, concerns or complaints about University policies, procedures and practices and who may have problems or conflicts in the workplace. It provides a place to go where they can have an informal, confidential conversation with a person who is independent and neutral. Patricia Pinkard is the designated Ombuds primarily for staff, and Dr. Bruce W. Lyon serves as Ombuds primarily for faculty. Either will see both faculty and staff, however, as well as students.
