Kieh Named New A&S Dean

The University of West Georgia will welcome a new dean of the College of Arts and Sciences on July 1. Dr. George Klay Kieh, Jr. accepted the offer of dean this week and will replace Dr. Don Rice, who served as interim dean for two years. Kieh is a professor of political science, and Rice is a professor of psychology.

Kieh, who is a professor in the Department of Political Science at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, chaired the political science department at Morehouse College and served as dean of International Affairs at Grand Valley.

He is also founding director of the Center for International Studies as well as the Institute for Conflict and Development Studies at Morehouse College.

Kieh’s move to Georgia is a sort of homecoming to family and friends. His four children live in Georgia as well as his grandchildren. He said one reason he accepted the offer is because the university is poised to make significant advancement in the next five to seven years.

“To be part of the leadership team working with President Sethna, faculty, students and the community is something I am looking forward to,” said Kieh. “West Georgia will become a Destination University.”

A political scientist by training, Kieh brings a range of academic and administrative experiences to this position, including program director, chair, dean and professor.

“His record of teaching and research success is both firmly grounded in his own discipline and informed by interdisciplinary interests in history, sociology and anthropology,” said Academic Affairs Vice President Dr. Thomas Hynes. “His administrative and leadership efforts have been described as reflecting both inclusiveness and decisiveness."
