West Georgia VoicesTo the Campus Community: Conflict is a fact of life, but it does not have to consume your life. The University of West Georgia Ombuds Office has been established to help faculty, staff and students to resolve issues of conflict and concerns, complaints and questions in the workplace, in the classroom, and elsewhere on campus. The word “ombuds” originates from a Swedish term “ombudsman” that refers to a person who is independent in structure, function and appearance to the highest degree possible within the organization. The role of the Ombuds is to be neutral and impartial. The mission of the office is to promote fairness, equitable treatment and respect throughout the university community. The Ombuds does not serve as an advocate or adjudicator for any individual or group nor make decisions about university policy. At UWG, Ms. Patricia Pinkard serves as staff Ombuds and Dr. Bruce Lyon serves as faculty Ombuds. Either will see both faculty and staff as well as students. Ms. Pinkard and Dr. Lyon have been trained in accordance with the standards of the International Ombudsman Association and report to the UWG President. The Ombuds Office can provide services to the University Community including coaching, referral, consultation, facilitation or mediation, shuttle diplomacy and information. The office has access to any other university office and maintains the confidentiality of all information received. When you experience an issue or concern that you are unable to resolve through the usual channels of communications or have a university-related problem that you do not know how to resolve, contact the Ombuds office at 9-4165 for assistance. --- Dear Readers, You are invited to submit a letter, a column of interest or an opinion to the editor.
