Students in the Running for Design
University of West Georgia is a competitor for the winning Peachtree Road Race tee shirt design for the second year in a row. Four out of five designs chosen as finalists this year are original designs from UWG students studying in a Digital Media for Artist class.
Hanna Kelly of Hampton, majoring in photography; Jessica Gerjets of Cumming, and Elizabeth Bounds of Carrollton, both majoring in graphic design; and Allison Bennet of Augusta, a painting major, will compete for the coveted honor of having their original design worn by 55,0000 participants in the Peachtree Road Race on July 4.
All five designs will be published in the March 21 Sunday edition of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and readers can vote for their favorite tee shirt design online at the ajc.com/peachtree site beginning on March 21. Four finalists will be awarded $100 and the winning artist will receive a $1,000 prize.
Deadline for voting is April 30 with the winning tee shirt design will not be revealed until race day.
The Atlanta Track Club will feature the five designs online as well as the previous years’ finalists’ designs on its website at http://www.atlantatrackclub.org. Online registration for the annual race will also begin on March 21.
“We are very excited to say the least,” said Clint Samples, professor of art in the media digital class. “These were chosen from hundreds of submissions.”
“As for the process, we tried to create strong designs by blending studio practices with type,” Samples said. “We really focused on design---and not submitting the first idea that was ‘cranked’ out. We designed and then critiqued as a class…then we revised the designs and critiqued again.”
Digital Media for Artists is primarily a web design class with an introduction to Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop at the beginning of the semester to get the students comfortable and proficient with the software.
