Kudos

Publications and Printing, UWG’s on-campus copy and printing center, recently received 11 first place awards for print excellence from the Printing Industry Association of Georgia. The largest state printing competition in the nation attracted 770 entries from 42 printing and imaging companies and seven schools. UWG staff members most directly involved in printing the winning works were Eddie Rogers, printing services supervisor; Keith Harris and Carlos Olvera, senior offset pressmen; and graphic artists Debby Holcombe of Publications and Printing, and Teresa Pyron of University Communications and Marketing.

Dr. Jim Burton (Marketing and Real Estate) led a workshop on “Enhancing Self Confidence” for the 2010 Carroll County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Academy on May 11 at the Burson Center in Carrollton.

Dr. Danilo M. Baylen, associate professor, and Dr. Cristine G. Goldberg, assistant professor, from the Department of Media and Instructional Technology, are co-authors of two articles, “Visual Literacy Meets Asian Culture: Images in Selected Picture Books” and “Be Not Afraid: Connecting Visual Principles and Emotions.” They were published in Critically Engaging the Digital Learner in Visual Worlds and Virtual Environments: Selected Readings of the International Visual Literacy Association (2010).

Each year Information Technology Services recognizes UWG employees who are instrumental in providing outstanding technology innovation, service, support and leadership potential on campus. This year’s recipients were Tammy Crews, Anna Obedkova, Ben Olson, Chris Harris and Dr. Marty Bray. Please congratulate these individuals as you see them around campus.

Campus Talk

Willie Wynn, in Central Stores, Receiving and Delivery, will retire on Oct. 1, after 43 years on campus. Taking over his position will be Chris Bradford.

Rory and Rhea Wojcik are the proud parents of a baby girl. Clara Michele Wojcik was born Thursday, Aug. 19 at 4:18 p.m., weighing 7 lbs., 4 oz. All are doing very well. Rhea works in the ETechs area of UWG Distance and Distributed Education; Rory works in the Circulation Equipment and Special Events area of UWG Information Technology Services.

Faculty and staff in the School of Nursing welcome Channa Cole as their new staff assistant. She comes to the department with a great deal of experience with UWG.

Obituary

The UWG community mourns the death of Robin (Rob) Tornow, director of the University of West Georgia-Newnan from 1996-2007. Tornow died on Aug. 23 in Newnan.
