University Club holds year-end picnic
The Band played for hours thanks to (L-R) Van
Edwards (vocals
and keyboard), central stores and receiving; Karen
Lingrell (vocals),
program specialist for Career Services; Steven
Broome, (bass guitar and vocals),
UWG photographer; Todd Slate (drums), maintenance;
and Lynn
Agan (lead guitar), director of Campus Planning
and Development.
• The last University Club Social of the year ended with
live music, dancing and good conversation. The annual outdoor event
featured a banquet of picnic fare under a tent in the beautiful
gardens of the Alumni House. The social is open to faculty, staff
and retired UWG folks and is held twice a month throughout the
academic year. Talk of a summer version of the event is being tossed
around and new committee members are invited to join.
• Outstanding
faculty were recognized at the 21st Annual Campus Activities Awards
ceremony. Dr. David Osborne,
associate professor of biology, Ronald Shepherd,
temporary instructor of secondary education, and Dr. James
Burton, professor of business
administration, received the Student Government Association Faculty
Member of the Year Award.
• Dr.
Jack Jenkins, professor of psychology and special assistant
to the president for minority affairs, was also honored by UWG
students at the Campus Activities Awards ceremony with the Student
Organization Advisor of the Year Award.
Kudos
Under
the direction of Dr. Carol Gingerich, associate professor of music,
five students from the Department of Music traveled to Heflin,
AL to perform a series of three concerts in a piano concert tour
for the community. The students performed at Cleburne County High
School, Cleburne County Elementary School and the Heflin Arts Council.
The Heflin Arts Council and the Department of Music provided funding
for the concert tour.
The
Department of Nursing recently had a review completed for their
accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education
(CCNE) and had an outstanding score. The department met all the
standards and there were no recommendations given. The CCNE is
an autonomous accrediting agency contributing to the improvement
of the public’s
health. CCNE also ensures the quality and integrity of baccalaureate
and graduate education programs preparing effective nurses.
Dr. Karl Steinen, professor of anthropology, presented a paper
entitled “Mounds,
Walls and Water: Understanding Middle Woodland Ceremonial Centers
in the Interior Southeast” at a meeting
of the Society for American Archaeology in Vancouver.
Kudos features UWG faculty and staff articles and book publications, conference attendance and presentations, grants, organizational leadership and awards. E-mail your news to the Campus
Chronicle editor.
