2001 European Tour
The UWG Jazz Ensemble presented concerts in five European cities during the spring of 2001. The tour began in Heidelberg and ended in Munich. The ensemble performed in a variety of venues, both indoor and outdoor settings. The tour began in the Jazzhaus Heidelberg, a jazz club located in the basement of the brewery. The stage was small but the crowd was appreciative of the band and included folks from America and even England. In Innsbruck the concert stage was a pavilion under the Alps, the Musikpavillon im Hofgarten. In Munich the concert was at one of the largest jazz events in the city, the Waldwirtschaft Grosshesselohe der Jazz-Biergarten. The band alternated sets with the resident Dixieland Jazz Band of the club. The audience numbered between 200 to 500 people. The club enjoyed the performance and showered the band with many gifts, including food and glassware. The tour was extremely successful and a connection developed between the German/Austrians and the band. A second European tour is in the works and is projected for the spring of 2004. (A variety of pictures from the tour can be accessed through this website.) Although the plane flights were long the tour was well worth every penny spent and hour of sleep lost. A lasting bond has been formed between the UWG Jazz Ensemble and Germany/Austria.
The Jazz Ensemble always is looking for quality jazz performers who want to devote a portion of their time to this great American art form. There is no better way of spending your time while at UWG than by performing in this ensemble. Remember that jazz is America's music. By performing in our ensemble you help foster the reputation of UWG while preserving this great musical art. Please contact Dr. Daniel Bakos for more information. We look forward to hearing from you.
