Come and perform for Rodger Danes at the Twenty-Third Annual Sunbelt Jazz Festival.
Mr. Danes will listen to your ensemble, provide a written critique, then rehearse and/or
play with your group.  This is an opportunity for your students to be directed by and
perform with a great jazz musician.  Imagine the excitement and inspiration your students
will have working so closely with Rodger Danes.

Rodger Danes, trumpet

Newnan, GA

Rodger was born in Dayton OH into a family of musicians.   His Father played piano and various other instruments.  His Mother was an accomplished pianist, and she instilled her love of music in Rodger and his two sisters.  Rodger began trumpet lessons at the age of 4. Music was always the highlight of family gatherings.

Rodger attended Memphis State University on a full music scholarship and studied music performance.  After leaving MSU, he toured with The Platters.  The end of that tour was just the beginning of Rodger's career.  He was a frequent performer at many popular events, including the Atlanta and the Mobile Jazz Festivals.  He also played the world premier of the opera "Deseret".

In 1973 Rodger became a member of the Augusta Symphony while serving in the U. S. Army.  Later, transferring to Atlanta, he served as chief composer/arranger with the Forscom Band, traveling and performing all over the world.  In a nation-wide competition held by the National Federation of Music, Rodger received a three star award for his original compositions, both sacred and jazz.

After retiring from the U. S. Army Rodger continued to pursue his love of music.  He has been very active in the Atlanta night life since 1975, performing at Hands on Atlanta, High Museum, Atlanta Civic Center, Oscar's, Luxe, and Mick's in Underground.  Creative Loafing's James Rozzi dubbed Rodger "the ghost of Chet Baker".  Rozzi said "Dane's playing obviously echoes the stately lyricism of Baker's more laid back years", giving him excellent reviews.

Rodger has performed with such greats as Louis Bellson, Cab Calloway, Buddy Morrow and The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Billy Cobham, Tony Waters,Bill Watris, James Darren, as well as The Dells.  Rodger was also priviledged to perform for Lorne  Green, Buddy Ebson, Colin Powell and Carolyn Kennedy at the Beverly Hilton.
