Spring 2009 Distance Education Survey (Student Comments)

Question 26: What suggestions would you make for future online courses?

         .

         :)

         ?

         ??

         A different professor.

         A differnt text book.

A face-to-face course meeting should be made available (not mandatory) at the beginning of each semester. This would alleviate confusion that may persist should an initial face-to-face meeting not be utilized.

A fair evaluation of the assessment practices related to on-line classes

a little more knowledge upfront on how to take the assessments

A meeting at the beggining and the end of the semester.

A system that is able to accomodate many users at one time.

A system that is better able to handle many students login at one time.

alerts for when new things are up and the professor giving personal notes on each chapter

All assignments be located in the assignment drop box, including discussions.

All courses utilize the Weekly Backpacks that Dr. **** uses on here course website.

All have tutorial videos, and let students have the teacher cell phone for any immediate questions.

All the long discussions are ridiculous to read and critique.

Allow a least a 24 hour period to take the tests.

Allow students to take quizzes twice and drop their two lowest grades overall instead of one grade out of one section and one out of another.

Allow students to take the Quiz all week.

         Already answered this several times.

         Already mentioned.

Always keep it open to turn in assignments early!

         An Atlanta campus.

An online class is an online class, so there are no suggestions.

         as above

As full time employees it gets alittle overwhelmed at times. But somehow someway I got it done and feel great about my progress!

Assignment should be posted at the beginning of the semester so students can work on them!

At least 3 face to face meetings.

At this point there was nothing I would change. I was very pleased with the teletutor availability for the course. I was able to utilize that service for assistance when needed.

Be more clear on deadlines and due dates

Be prompt and grade work within a reasonable time.

Be sure the instructor is knowledgeable about the Learning Management System (CourseDen).

Better communication with students, please. Do not give us conflicting instructions.

Better communications between students and conselors.

         better comunication

         Better directions.

         Better SAM software.

Better technology for assignments when they are due.

better webct operation. The web site seems to have too many computer bugs

Block off plenty of time to get the work done and prepare for things to go wrong in order to provide yourself time to correct them.

         Cannot think of anything.

Can't think of anything at the moment.

Change this evaluation to have one overall form for the Distance Education Survey instead of having to do this survey for each course. I'm getting tired of answering the same questions for each course. You should still have the individual course specifi

Chat times (live) would help. Voluntary workshops would help in the middle of the class schedule.

         check webct

Clarify 12pm daytime when the quizzes are due.

         Clear instructions.

Clearer directions for assignments during the orientation.

close the assignments at the time they are due

Consistency in the set up of modules in all courses.

COurseDen needs to be updated so that it is compatible with newer versions of firefox and explorer.

Create helpful powerpoint..make the test a little easier..no group projects!

Decrease the useless face-to-face time. Introductions can be achieved online by posting our introduction sheet on a discussion board, no need to spend an hour going around the room saying who your name etc. How to navigate the course - post a video tut

Deduct points for late assingments. Do not make it deadlined. That way students who might have trouble at the last minute can get help. It does not matter that they had all semester because they are still within their alloted time and they might have tec

do everything on-line such as tests quizzes assignments etc.

         Do not conduct courses online.

Do NOT give so much for and say to reserve 13 hours for one assignment.

Do not let this class be available online. No one knew what they were really getting into.

Do not start something big in the middle of the years should be avoided.

Do not use the total online approach.

Do the work. and dont forget

Don't be a horrible teacher. Give your students a little leeway room. Or have it where you can make up quizzes and get half the points.

Don't require students to perform busy work just to justify an "online" portion of instruction. Make the online work more beneficial.

Don't spend as much time covering basic computer skills that everybody should already have. Eg. excel, word. The cism 1010 class covered this material. Also the course emphasized MIS terminology way too much. If I am not an IT major I don't need to kno

Dr. **** should be the model for others to use when designing an online class. His courses are well-organized and engaging. He's great at teaching online!

         due date reminders

Easier way to get in touch with Dr. **** himself, I have tried on many occasions and could not get through.

         Everything good to me

         Everything works well.

Except for the log in rule, the class was fairly easy to get through.

Extend the due dates for exams into the weekend.

         Faster grading of assignments

         fewer assignments

         Fewer quizes.

finish work early on in the semester.

For professors to possibly have a deadline for getting back to students when the students have posted for help or have questions.

For the distance learners, the library should provide the articles to them without them having to come to the library to obtain them just because they have them in house. When you live >85 miles away it is a major inconvience to drive 2 1/2 hours just t

For the professors to be very clear about what they expect and what they want and to answer questions directly

For this class, I suggest a new professor. One who is fair and will actually communicate with his or her students.

         free book

Give a hand off that shows what you can and can't do with the blackboard

Give feedback to students work. Offer more class online.

Give more examples of expectations and assignments.

         Give step by step instructions!

         Great! Nothing really needs improvement.

Group students together that live near each other

Have a 24 hour help line for computer hadicaps like me

Have a group meeting in the chat feature of WebCT - to have group discussions and let them be monitored by the Professor instead of posting a discussion.

Have all quizzes and assignments avialable for students to do as fast or slow as they wish, like this course.

Have announcements set up for when assignments and quizzes are due by.

Have at least two face-to-face meetings during the course of the semester, just as a follow up with the students

have at least two in person sessions

Have at least two more in-class sessions a semester.

         Have more available.

Have more class on-line to choose from.

Have more meetings for professors on how to handle an on-line course.

have office hours that are readily available so that studens can come and ask questions

Have one proffesor that is over the course rather than the four I had instructing mine.

Have others proofread syllabi in order to clarify vague instructions prior to students receiving them.

Have teachers complete web ct in the same manner.

have the due date time be later in the day around 5 pm

Have the instructors keep in mind that adults want to learn but it is not necessary to overload students with course work.

Have the professor mandated to check in everyday like we are. Have the professor responsible for assisting students--not ignoring them.

         have work submissions 12:00am.

high lite due dates and other important information so it is easier to keep up with.

how the group projects are conducted

I am hopeful that online classes will save UWG money in the future and that more classes (especially graduate classes) are offered completely online or with only 1 on-campus meeting. It makes school so much easier when you don't have to drive 65 miles ea

I am satisfied with the way online classes were handled this semester.

I do not have any suggestions

I do not have any suggestions.

I do not have any suggestions.

I do not have any suggestions.

         I do not have any.

I do not like a large amount of little stuff to do. I like larger projects over the time of the course.

         i don't know.

I dont think online classes should be so expensive

I dont think that online classes should be so expensive

I enjoyed having podcasts available to listen to when it was convient for me.

I feel that in addition to required assignments, there ought to be one weekly required chat session in which the professor and all the students discuss any questions about the week's lesson.

I guess I would just make it easier to talk with the teacher if a problem arised.

I have no suggestions for future on-line courses.

I have no suggestions other than perhaps more than one face to face meeting such as one before classes like we had as well as one in the middle and one at the end to discuss progress.

         I have no suggestions.

I have none at this time. This was my first on-line course

         I have none.

I have taken online courses in the past and done really poorly in them. There are certain types of classes that, for me, require face-to-face instruction. This particular class worked well online because it was simply discussion and completion of an on

I know they don't want to send emails for letting us know when stuff is do, but it would really be helpful. I have a full-time job and other classes so it would have been nice to have that.

I like all the discussions and feedback from other classmates.

I like less little items due for assignments as opposed to fewer larger assignments. I would prefer not so much checking in to read postings.

I like organized professors who respond in a timely manner!

I liked the way the class was set up

I loved that it was all online. It should be that way every semester.

I really think there needs to be more online classes available.for working mothers and others that dont have the time to commute to school.

I recommend that the number of students in a CourseDen section be limited to 10-12. Maybe separate classes into two groups on CourseDen. This would prevent too much discussion that is hard to follow.

I suggest that you do not make big changes in the delivery system in the middle of the year.

I think all is good at the moment with the online courses, I cannot really think of anything that should be improved on at the moment.

I think cutting edge CourseDen software should be brought up to speed with the latest versions of IE and Firefox. Also, the wait time for tech support should be decreased. I think CourseDen should have the kinks worked out. I think work should be archiva

I think it would be helpful if all online courses had an optional first class meeting for students to go over the course requirements and syllabus.

I think that the instructor should explain the reasoning behind the grade.

I think there should be at least 3 face to face meetings.

I think this course should be taught by a full-time faculty member or someone who is not juggling a full-time career, family, and teaching a class part-time.

I thought it was easy to access and keep up.

I want to make more on line classes; I would like more classes to be avaialable on line.

I wish it were easier to contact this instructor.

I wish that they all could be as organized as Dr. **** class.

I would have instructors answer all email questions with a 12-24 hour turn-around. It is difficult to be away and not get information you need for a course if the email is not opened on time or is answered too late. Traditional students get their instr

I would have liked to meet some of the time face-to-face. This course was supposed to be that way, however the professor made it completely online and I felt that I had very little support and instruction.

I would have preferred one module per week with all of the materials and assignments with that one module. Also, I would have liked the assignments to be due on Sunday nights.

I would have the calendar filled out for all assignments with due dates, so that a student can simply click on the calender rather than look at the syllabus and add it.

I would help if each class could have a weekly conference or web call that could be utilizied if needed.

I would like all on-line courses to utilize the Weekly Backpacks that Dr. **** uses in her courses.

I would like for the instructor to be on call later in the evenings.

I would like to have tests listed on specific days on the syllabus.

I would make more me time with the book to make sure I could to the work without every having to worry about it.

I would recommend more of a check on the quizzes. I found, what I thought, were a few grammatical errors. These made finding the correct answer confusing because I was unsure if it was an error of a trick to through you off. I got the questions wrong.

I would recommend more types of classes like this.

I would suggest that everything is working properly, but for the most part I would not change anything.

I would suggest that there be a confirmation on all submitted assignments. Not just on the quizzes.

I would suggest to have more helpful ways that you can ask something face to face and have someone to show you how to do it as you are.

If course is partially online, I would like more than just a quiz on the day we meet - maybe a brief lecture covering the material for the next week.

If sometimes T.A.'s would like send reminders of quizzes.

If there is anyway to make assignments more linear that would be great.

If we knew the needed resources earlier (i.e. required books) it would be easier to acquire them online from bookstore or other resources.

if you have to do updates to program do it in the middle of the night after 1 am.

         I'm not sure.

         I'm not sure.

In general, I like the online courses at UWG much better. This class was an exception to that opinion. This has nothing to do with Distance Learning and everything to do with the instructor. The only suggestion I can think of would be to make sure instru

Increase file size allowed on WebCT.

inform students about the fact that they need a special microphone before registering for the course

Instructor responses a bit more current thanb several days later or not at all.

Instructor return emails in a more timely manner.

Instructors creating or taking over a course new to them should be required to develop the first half of the course by the beginnig of the semester and the second half two weeks prior to the midterm. All assignments should be posted, clear, spell checked

         Instructors have office hours.

         instructors who are more involved

         It is great as is.

It just seemed like there was alot of busy work, so maybe not so much busy work...

It must be the righ type of course

It would have helped me if course den was less crowded.

It's all about priority and not procrastinating

just a little bit more time to complete quizzes or tests. 10 minutes isn't enough sometimes.

Just do one or two chats during the semester.

just perfect dont change a thing

Just to offer more classes online. Let there be more of a selection for future and current students.

Just use WebCT, it is a lot easier.

Keep adding more. And it would be nice to have some upper level courses offered online, even if it only half time or part time online. Especially for those of us who have full-time jobs.

Keep in mind the fact that most graduate students have a full time job, families, other classes, and other responsibilites when setting course requirements.

         Keep it simple.

         Keep it simple.

         Keep it simple.

         Keep it the same.

         keep lines of communication open

Keep offering these classes. For working people this form of education is the golden mountain.

Keep on keeping on! I really enjoyed the course.

Keep the the lines of communication open with instructor and student both answering emails in a timely fashion.

         Keep them coming!

         Keep them coming~!

keep them online. Do not require students taking online courses to meet with other students, come to campus, and use so much paper. It negates any reason to have a course online.

         keep up the good work

         Keep up the good work.

         Less assignments

         less busy work

         Less busy work.

         Less F2F classes.

         Less icons. Simpler version.

Let there be atleast one second chance. Even God gives second chances. Otherwise the course was great!

Let there be more coures to take.

Literature courses should not be offered on-line.

Longer deadlines, even some overlapping deadlines.

Mainstream forms. Please condense the forms for field experience into one user friendly form.

Maintain high participation levels of professors in the course. This inspires the students to participate more.

Make access to the teacher easier.

         make final online

Make it a face to face class because there is more gained than lost.

         make it more understandable.

Make it where you only have to come to a maximum of 1 class

Make it where you only have to come to a maximum of 1 class

         Make more available!!!!

         Make sure all components work.

         Make sure all components work.

Make sure all directions for assignment submission are clear.

Make sure all of the directions for assigments make sense and are more thorough. Make sure words are spelled correctly on quizes.

Make sure all the components work!

Make sure all the problems are gone before starting the online class

Make sure information goes out to each student instructing them how to access the new sites.

Make sure instructors are strong in on-line learning.

Make sure online teachers are going to respond to emails.

Make sure people are better informed of the help they can recieve, and that even though it is an online class professors are still there to help.

Make sure students actually need the textbook before telling us it is required

Make sure students are aware and familiar with the software applications being utilized in the course.

Make sure that you know the deadlines for assignments.

Make sure the answers to the quizzes do not IN ANY WAY conflict with the information in the book.

Make sure the instruction is very clear.

Make sure the professor is not overwhelmed with too many classes.

Make sure the professor is not so overwhelmed with his workload that he can't answer questions in a timely manner.

Make sure the professors are actively involved on a daily basis. Make sure they are evaluating assignments on a timely basis and providing helpful feedback.

Make sure to keep up with deadlines and keep a checklist to ensure that you are completing assignments in a timely manner.

Make syllabus, etc available earlier before the semester actually starts

Make the assignments have more time and attempts to do well.

Make the class size more manageable for the instructors.

         Make the classes totally on-line.

         Make the course complete on-line.

MAke the deadlines a little bit longer for people that have other responsiblilties

make the direction for the assignments easier to understand

Make the hold time on the tech support hotline shorter. Also work on improving CourseDen software so it's more stable and less likely to crash in the middle of posting an assignment or long message. I have no problem with the content of this course, itse

Make the program online for all aspects of the course and its requirements.

Make the work be due during the week.

         Make them all on line

Make them have step-by-step instructions like this one

Make them more compatible with newer versions of explorer and firefox

Make turn in times more noticeable.

maybe 12 or 15 min to complete test

Maybe a little interaction when they can't find something in a project through email and make sure they just didn't dkip over anything and it was an error. Everyone makes mistakes but when it comes to grades its a big deal.

Maybe extend the time limit a little.

maybe not have as much work to do on some projects.

maybe thin out the work some

Meet at least twice in the beginning!

Meet more online. The Vista projects were long and I did not learn as much as I was hoping to for the assignment

         mnl

Not everyone has embraced the concept of Vista. Unfortunately, Vista was required for this course.

not make it a requirement tto log on every single day

Not so much information available at once. It is so overwelming with all this information. It's hard to know what to look and and when to look at it.

Partial online but require more face to face meetings.

Place the grades after they are recieved on course den.

Possibly having a chatroom for students and the intstructor to work through problems.

         Post assignments early!

Professor was more helpful. I know it is an online course, but they are still professors.

Professors need to be actively involved in their online classes. They need to interact with their students frequently, not just post work and grades. There need to be greater depth to the class than just the graded 'hoop-jumping' that occurs when the p

Skip the mandatory face to face meeting.

Slow the pace of homework or at the very least change the due dates to be much less inconvenient for those who may have to work the days they don't have school. The teacher should make considerably more efforts at communicating with students, informing

         Software needed readily available.

Some courses need to be available at your satellite campuses to enable all students the same access to services. I don't think it is fair to charge me for services that I CAN NOT utilize since I am such a distance from your campus!

Some type of reminder for when things are due

Start the first semester with face to face about creating Electronic Portfolio from day 1. Go ahead a make a folder on desktop and start it now!

         That grading be done faster

that if we have a meeting in class, it has a real point to it, not just where we sit around

That instructors are organized, and that instructors give helpful feedback (especially when asked specific questions).

That she check and answer her email regularly, she grades assignments in a reasonable time frame, and she spread assignments out more and not have multiple due on one day.

That the instructor make him or herself more available to students even if only by telephone.

That there should be extra-credits and also make-up dates for missed assignments

The CourseDen is difficult to use at first.

The instructor was great and I would love to take her again.

The system changed from WebCT to CourseDen....with no warning. School & system was not prepared

         There are too many icons

There should always be a discussion board. This should be manditory for any class using online resources.

There should not be a time set to when we can submit assignments. Time/hours should be all day on day assigned to submit.

They need to really get their system together.

This course was put together well

         This one was great

To be more interactive with the students using chat and discussion postings in Webct.

Variety in assignments. I would have liked to see not only cases and critiques but some other components as well, such as "real world" case studies - things we hear about in the news.

very clear instruction on what the instructor is looking for in the assignments.

Videos discussing about the class material along with those giving instructions to module exercises, and reminders of upcoming tests or quizzes.

         Virtual meetings for more interaction.

We not have to do Foliotek.

We were required to individually open 1500 discussion posts. Absolutely rediculous. A class would not talk that much in person.

         Web-cam?
