Spring 2011 Distance Education Survey (Student Comments)

Question 24: What suggestions would you make for future online courses?

Make this class totally online.

None

More helpful hints were capable in each assignment

If a students has a question about a problem with an assignment, try to answer him/her. I think some of the students were frustrated with asking questions and not getting a specific answer.

None

The cost is very expensive for online courses.

Make it to where it can keep up with attendance without having to send the teacher a mail message

That they are a little better organized.

Well, for starters, don't assign a textbook. I originally bought mine for like $180 since there are no used versions because the UWG bookstore is horrible but ended up returning it because I realized I wouldn't need it--and I didn't, I got A's and B's on the assessments without the book because it is available on Google for free.

no suggestions

no in class time

Please find out a way to prevent the system from timing out when you are creating messages in the text editor mode (whereby you can change the type to bold/italics, insert links, etc). The system kicked me out on several occasions when working in this mode and I lost much needed information.

Not so much work and not due on Sundays.

nothing, it is great.

I have no suggestions for the future on-line courses.

NONE

Make exams available at any campus. I work 1/2 mile from the Newnan campus and would've liked for my exams to have been proctored there.

N/A

offer more.

To offer students a final examination study guide earlier in the semester. My final is in 2 days and I don't know what it will cover.

I would add some extra assignments here and there in case students need to bring up any grades.

i feel that the online set up works.

offer ebook for course as well

vocabulary lists.

Even though it is an online class there was a lot of information and work especially if you have other classes

More time forgiving.

I would suggest more space in between a paper or test.

N/A

Links that open when you click them, without having to open them in new windows.

I think that the discussion section in course den could be improved upon so that students can feel safe about writing their discussion in the allotted space rather than copying it from a Word document.

n/a

More flexibility in due dates.

Detailed calendars are very helpful.

N/A

nothing

This course is so well planned that I cannot think of any improvements that need to be made.

having email alerts before something is due... I'm not sure.

none

I think that this was a successful online course.

Nothing

Develop a more interesting way to provide lectures for the students.

I know this is asking for a lot, but if we could connect our phones to courseden and recieve updates such as grades and announcements to our phone that would be great.

none

Honestly it has nothing to do with online, the instructor was unbearable.

seems to be a smooth machine as is

I think that the scheduled maintenance should be on Sunday rather that Friday. My online course had assignments due on Friday, but there was never anything due on Sunday.

none

Make more upper level courses available online!!

n/a

nothing. no suggestion.

early submittal option for heavy graded assignments to see if student is doing it correctly or by the teachers standards before submitting for the date due grade

None (unmentioned) that I can think of

I will strongly recommend to anyone who brings up the subject that if a student is attending an institution at which there are hundreds of effective instructors and well-facilitated classrooms, then he or she should not waste the valuable opportunity to learn from them instead of an internet-based system. There is no possible way to gain the intimate classroom feel and level of interaction of a physical classroom when one is alone in front of a computer screen. Distance education, especially in the fields of English and foreign languages, offers nothing aside from logistical convenience to students that traditional classes do not offer. The level of cognitive dissidence that one experiences between sending an email and receiving a reply is great; classroom q&a's are instant and productive for the entire class, not just one student.

I liked the course.

none

Make sure that teachers have a dealine they stick with. Another online class I took the teacher kept changing things, and it made it very difficult.

Good job!

If it was more affordable and less reading.

I would like some that are entirely online.

Some things in counseling you just cannot receive in an online eviornment and that was even evident on our quizzes in this course.

Not require departments to use them.

Please make CourseDen more compatible with Internet Explorer. It's annoying to have to switch to Mozilla Firefox because CourseDen isn't responding to Internet Explorer. Also, WebCT has this irritating habit of 'kicking you out' of the classroom when you click on a file and try to download it the first time. You have to get back into the classroom and click on the file a second time to be able to open it. Surely, that is a technical glitch which can be fixed.

Possibly two face-to-face online meetings per module so that there is more room for open questions.

Make sure all material/assignments are clear and easy to understand. This helped me tremendously.

N/A

I will be trying to avoid on-line courses.

There could have been more discussion if the professor was not so particular about posting in APA style and with correct references. Although this is needed with some assignments, this discouraged me from regular participation like what would take place in a classroom.

Less points deducted for malfunctions which are out of the students control.

Over the last four semesters at UWG, I have taken 10 eCore classes and 1 CourseDen course (the CourseDen being this one). I must say that I believe CourseDen has a lot to learn from eCore with regards to classroom structure, encouragement of the use of online discussions (as opposed to mass emails to the entire class), lesson accuracy, quiz accuracy, etc. Considering that UWG paves the way for all other participating USG institutions in the eCore program, I do not understand the level of quality between these classes. I am registered for another 4 CourseDen classes over the next two semesters, so I hope that these change my opinion.

Nothing

Definetely doing the excel formulas chapter in class, those were very hard to understand without in-class intruction.

i would never suggest an online course to a student.

Utilize the discussions more.

None.

Perhaps a second mandatory meeting before spring break to answer any student questions in a setting where others could here and perhaps get a better understanding of what's required in the course. Maybe it would make students feel more comfortable to email the teacher for any questions.

Advice for getting Microsoft office tools before beginning the course.

An even more detailed syllabus and to require all assignments to be easily capable of understanding for the majority of people.

Make sure the syllabus is followed exactly. Times and dates.

For the teachers to be more involved

none

Nothing, taking this on-line course was pleasant and convenient!

Nothing.

Make deadline dates on the same days so that students are not confused. This class had deadlines on the same days so that students knew that each week there would be something due.

I cannot currently think of anything.

Organized grade book.

I would suggest more discussions to keep the class interesting otherwise I enjoyed this course

nothing

Change everything. Improve the sever

non

The teacher should post assignments with more than one to two days to complete it. With the last online class I took, the teacher allowed at least a week to compete each assignment. I liked that set up much better because if I felt like getting my work done early I could, or if I had a busy week I could budget my time in order to complete the assignments when I could find the time.

Cut out the group project, or at least make it an easier project because its online.

Do not allow group work. All on-line course work should be individual.

Make the classes cheaper

Make sure that people know when stuff is due. Because there was a time when the site said the module was due on one day, but some of it was due earlier.

The person in charge of faciliatating the class should be involved in it also.

This course should not be an online class. This material should only be presented in a class room setting. The material was very difficult to learn and understand.

I believe that all online courses should require students to meet once at the beginning of the semester in order to meet instructors and each other as many online course require group work and participation. I also believe that in order to more accurately monitor academic integrity, midterms and finals should be required to be administered by the instructor at the college or require additional coursework to check for understanding of material and identify midterm/final as open book.

Make some of the class 'in class' and some 'on line'.

less importance on paper structure and more on the subject the paper is about.

none

n/a

I liked that discussions weren't mandatory in this class. It's such a burden to HAVE to post and discuss what we're learning.

N/A

none

I wouldn't change anything. The structure of the class was solid.

Nothing related to this course. Instructor was great.

keep it the same

An inside webct instant messenger for the students in the class, wimba pronto is good but its external and not many people have it.

I would suggest having more tutorials for how to work on-line courses.

Make the cost cheaper

I would say to start trying to include some more videos on how things are done. I would also say try to find a way to start doing video chatting.

give more time on the quizzes

n/a

none

Every online course should open all assignments at once with various closing dates. This way a student can complete the course at their own pace. Online classes that require weekly participation defeat the purpose of on-line convenience.

n/a

Clear directions. I do like that the assignments were given out ahead of time. It would have been nice to have some type of guideline to what the quizzes going to be on. A study guide would have been nice.

Nothing.

None in terms of this course.

none.

Less TA's or at least have the professor check behind them. Utilize discussions more.

Everything was great.

Get rid of the online tutoring, or make the service easier to access and more efficient.

It would be nice to have a reminder that the student could set up to remind us of due dates.

the powerpoints to have more information.

Make MacBook Friendly

Move the due dates to night time.

None

More of them to be run the same way this class was.

none. I think for this class every assignments and assessment was well organized.

none

allow more courses to be obtainable online

My own suggestions is making it found where a student can find help on assignments early in the semester, because by the time i knew i could get help it was the end of the semester.

I would like to see more classes offered online for areas outside of core classes if it is possible.

none

Utilize discussions more. Professor should check behind TA's

No suggestions

allow students to have a little more flexibility

This is the first time I've taken a class online so I don't know.

Lower the cost of the books or extra fees. We have all these on-line classes now and all theses fees but the books are like $100. And some classes we cant even pick if we want online or face-to-face. So why should we have to pay extra b/c the school wants to make classes more online?

None

Let the teacher take a leave of absense rather than having a class that she cannot manage.

Have the teacher present for more than one time a month.

Inform students ahead of time that the class is going to be a virtual class instead of a traditional on-line course, so that students can mentally prepare themselves for the experience.

This course needs to be taught face-to-face.This course should not be taught online.

Courseden should be easier to follow. Less printing. Most of the stuff we printed was repeated in every module---waste of paper and ink. I think the teacher should have taken into account that we did not sign up for an online class. I understand why things had to be done the way they were but also should have been more understanding, especially in the participation grade.

Do not make skype classes.

Teaching over Skype may work for a history or English class but should NOT be used to teach *******!

i would suggest not having an *********** class as an online course. Students need the face to face meetings so they can show examples of their problems with the required assignments.

dont have so many folders within folders. it is confusing and difficult to keep up with.

Have fewer class notes. The amount of paper I used for this class was ridiculous! Maybe one or two files to open with everything included would be best. Opening 4 folders with at least 4 documents in them per class was extremely time consuming and not worth it!

Do not put this class online.

The professor be a little more flexible/ understanding in using Skype

Keep **************, a wonderful educator and taught me alot!!!!

More communication between the students and the instructor. The instructor should always create a convenient time for questioning for both parties.

There should be a life instructor to assist students as they do their assignments.

Be clear with assignments

None, I enjoyed this class!

none

None

I do not think students should have to come to campus to speak with an advisor every semester. I have to take time off work to meet with an advisor to list classes that I may not even be able to take (due to being full) when I go to register on-line. It is a waste of my time and the counselor's time. Not every student needs to have their hand held. With gas prices increasing, HOPE benefits decreasing, and lost wages from taking off work, it is very troubling to have to come to campus to meet with an advisor. We should be able to email such information to our advisor and the hold be released so that we may register when it is our time.

N/A

The examples of assignments was appreciated. Any other visuals that might make learning more interesting would be good. I am definitely a visual learner.

No campus visits.

Possibly another face to face meeting. Also seeing examples of course projects is helpful.

Change up the format of your home page. It is very different from most other courses and it is difficult to find assignements and information on the course den site.

Suggest folks do the readings early and get those done.

utilize online chat

None

formative assessments throughout and not just a summative assessment at the end

Great Course!

Post things all at once, so we can do them ahead of time!

none

That assignments be given on time and more lecture time.

that teachers respond to emails faster.

I just feel like the instructor needs to be more dedicated to the class. Because it is online the instructor must be more responsive to emails. And not wait 5 days before replying to student's questions.

No suggestions

I would suggest maybe an easier way for students to access more material.

Fix the ablity to pull up thigs inside the backpack

none

I think that this class will be efficient if it's all online and not just partly online.

The teacher has to be organized and they must be forced to give exact dates of when assignments are due!

None

for the instructor to be more clear as to what is due and what time.

Easier to open files.

more online ******* and up, please

Teachers should tell students what kind of internet server is best for the course den , that way the dont have problems logging on. also i would recommend that all online classes must meet once on campus before it starts.

To only take them if you are responsible enough to do the work, because if you don't take it seriously you won't do well. And online courses are easy to forget about.

I would like a chat option that is compatible with a mac. I found it hard to get it to work with my computer (a mac).

none.

Possibly putting textbooks online? in a non-downloadable format perhaps. It didn't matter much for this course as the book wasn't very expensive, but it could help with others.

Only offer simple classes online, such as 1000 and 2000 level. Higher difficultly classes need to be taught in the classroom setting where they can be understood.

I don't have any.

This class was very time consuming. I feel like I spent more time on this class than the others that I met in face to face. My suggestion is that it should be less time consuming.

At the end of the course open the lessons a little earlier for those who want to get ahead.

no comment.

I have no suggestions thus far.

None

Make sure the professor has a background knowledge of teaching an online course and/or using WebCT Vista.

Nothing

I would only make the suggestion for a better online book.Whenever I had homework to do it was not that helpful and I had to go to other sources for help.

Send emails through my.westga instead of just CourseDen.

Don't make the UWG library a necessary asset for your course. They are unreliable and could not get my sources for me when I needed them for a research paper and the staff was EXTREMELY rude. I had to go to an off-campus library to do research.

none.

Better communication. Actually use courseden instead of everything being on *******. Utilize discussions! Answer emails! Communication!!

Nothing. The complaints I have heard about Online courses were not a problem in this course with ****************. **** kept a very current and accurate gradebook, while keeping his assignments very regular, fair, and clear.

voice narrated notes

if you plan on taking online classes i suggest you be really neat.

better communication

Time is everything. there should be ample time for students to do assignments. time assignments build up anxiety and causes students to feel pressured and stressed, such as myself.

na

The concepts should be geared more to teaching concepts for child in elementary school.

Online tests so that they may be graded quicker.

For the professor to provide more notes that elaborate ideas, concepts and requirements a bit more. Perhaps some online videos discussing key topics.

LOTS of instruction, e.g., videotaped lectures, detailed notes, easy way to get instruction and feedback from instructor when questions come up.

MAKE SURE YOU COMMUNICATE.

If other ****** courses are going to be available on-line, they need to be organized and run like this g********* course (***********)

I now think they are acceptable.

open the modules earlier for those who like to work ahead when they have the time

Quicker returns on grading.

To make sure everything is up to date and works all the time

Do not procrastinate and take the time to listen what the instructor has to teach, its helps when you get to the actual assignment.

None.

Always give students a place they can go to have face to face help because that is how some students learn the best. I got throught it just fine, but you have to think of all your studnets learning needs.

Step by step guidelines and instructions

Try to get grades out faster. I know the class is a big one, but we've only gotten about half of the grades for the assignments turned in.

The suggestion would be doing more discussions as a class. Other than that, *** had a lot of different activities, projects, and assignments. I enjoyed it!

NO group work, its too stranious and stressfull

Make all assignments individually and not include group work

Keep or add videos to help assignments.

I would like to see at least a minimal structure that provides students with an easy to follow basic format to prevent the enormous amount of wasted time and confusion each new class online.

Take away the group work on the course.

Not Applicable

********* discussion should have the same timeline has the webct discussion. There should be more information Macs because everyone does not have a PC.

None

Make all the work available at the beginning of the semester.

I feel this course should have the option of being held in-class.

Drop online discussions.

Reply to emails promptly. Communication is key!

Meet in person more often. Even a few times throughout the semester would be nice.

Make sure the instructors are understanding that even though these classes are online, most of us are taking 3-4 more classes we still have work to do in outside of class also.

Always provide help for students that need it in the Ed Center Computer Labs in the afternoons and evenings - especially for teachers that work and student-teachers that are doing their internships

More face-to-face meetings. I understand that such things may defeat the purpose, but I would have learned much more about the tasks we were asked to perform if I had learned them in a classroom environment.

N/A

more reminders

Have all the assignments posted from day one so people can get a head start on assignments.

Eliminate group work.

I thought that this class was GREAT!

On-line classes are great, but I would have a teacher who is willing to respond and help students.

None

Tell people to be prepared that the workload is greater than a face to face class.

don't have students doing a lot of busy work or unnecessary responses to discussions. we know the discussions are only to make sure that people are participating. To me it's pointless and instructors should find another way to look at attendance and participation.

More organization.

Have professor respond to questions/emails more promptly.

The instructors need to be monitored. I am a Master's level graduate student...not a guinea pig for whatever software he wants to try out that week. I have not learned a thing this semester and find it pathetic I had to pay extra for an online class that did nothing but fill my computer with software I'll be deleting.

maintain the face-to-face meeting at the commencement of course

It should be considered that this is not the only course to be taken in a semester.so if the amount of the assignments could be reduced it will help a great lot

None.

Pick one on-line forum and stick to it.

Having many accessible tutorials, solutions to problems and answers to questions

encourage all students to actively participate in class discussion

Nothing!

More visuals!!!!

Add in more chat sessions.

Make sure teachers grade work and provide commments in a reasonable amount of time.

None.

I don't have any suggestions.

The reading summaries are busy work and are overwhelming in the beginning of the course with so many requirements for the course. The reading has value, but adult graduate students need to be focusing on the application of the reading in assignments that follow rather than writing reading summaries and reflections. Also, make group work optional. Finally, compact the syllabuis. It is so long. It gets confusing.

none

Easy access to available 'helpful' resources to find solutions to problems

More Visuals!!!!

With respect to submitting coursework, there were times that I wanted to go back and retrieve it shortly after submitting it and the option wasn't available.

I understand there is a push to have no meetings on campus, but I feel at least one is necessary.

Having optional classes.

None at this time. I like the fact that many have reduced the three face-to-face class meetings to once per semester.

I love online courses and truly feel that it is the way of the future. I have talked to others who are trained to teach online and they have told me that it should not be a mainly self study program. All info on website--including syllabus and assignments should be CURRENT and up to date. I actually had a point taken off in this course in that when I went to the website to make sure that I followed the guidelines for the teacher wanted since there is no verbal or email teacher direction. There were 2 guidelines for this assignment on the class website. One was not dated and the other was dated for the 2009 class. Since this is the year 2011 and NOT 2009, I used the undated version which unbeknownst to me was an even earlier version and I was supposed to use the 2009 guidelines. If my webpage and assignments were 2 years out of date, my administrator (and parents) would definitely let me know and would reflect in my evaluation.

That we actually have an online portion as in we are not always in the classroom 95% of the time.

The teachers need to collaborate and come to an understanding about the new technology provided to UWG!!! Made the semester more stressful than needed!

When they say online to actually be online

If it is conveyed to us as being an online class....then, by all means.....IT SHOULD BE!!!!!

Not have these professors EVER teach this class again. I have told all of my friends that this class was a train wreck. The teacher had another professor 'assist' with class and somehow the other ********* felt the need to have some form of grading in this class that ACTUALLY EFFECTED OUR GRADE. The two teachers could not agree on what they wanted us to do in means of class assignments. The syllabus would say one thing, our REAL professor would say another thing, and then the ********* who I never understand what her business was in our class in the first place would assign something different yet again. This class was ridiculous! There were no direction clearly given and the internet was used for nothing else other than to turn in assignments that both teachers assigned. This course was ridiculous. I'm advising everyone to drop the class if these teachers are the professor and take the class at a later date. What a joke.

To actually be online and not change it on us.

Give students a grace period to make things up.

UWG needs to be clear about on line classes and the correct percentage of the class that is on line becuase this class was misleading it said 50% on line but none of it was

If the class is suppose to be online, MAKE IT ONLINE! We were forced to meet EVERY ******** regardless of whether or not ************ was going to be there. not effective.

Clear, easy to follow instructions. Use online stuff only for stuff you can't do face to face.

Make the course information easier to understand in regards to the syllabus and schedule.

The teacher needs to stay active in the class. A teacher on campus would be in trouble for not showing up to class for a whole month, coming back for a week and then disappearing for another month.

Nothing that applies to this survey.

Be more involved or helpful for the understanding of assignments. Be clear in the expectations and don't change them (or the deadlines).

Actually have something to do with an online course so that when this survey comes up we aren't like 'Woah. This was an online course?'

n/a

none, I really enjoyed this class

If this course is supposed to be partially online then we should have less face to face meetings.

For this class I feel we need a different teacher or MAJOR MAJOR changes made!!!

I enjoy some online courses, but I do like face to face classes too.

Some on-campus meetings

My only suggestion would to make more classes available online

During the registration period, please list all dates of the face-to-face meetings so schedule conflicts do not occur.

N/A

In the future I would like for the chat portion of the class to be more of easier use.

None

No meeting at the beginning of class

Make the chat roomss easier to log into.

I feel as though we should have done a couple of classes dedicated to practicing doing the QRI-5. Other than that, i have no complaints.

No suggestions

Teachers need to stick to what they start with at the beginning of the course (syllabus, due dates, etc.) and not change them without offering another option (which ***( always does offer).

I like it when the professor can occasionally chat with us.

None, overall an enjoyable class to take online.

None

Make sure that the instructors guidelines are complete and easily understood.

Improve where ever needed.

Only what's in #25. Make chat available on smart phones.

Chats should have to be on the day the class is scheduled. I was in a group with people who did not want to chat on the scheduled day.

some face to face time

I would suggest that online classes be the only option. People with disabilities like myself, want options. I prefer face-to-face classes.

n/a

Have examples of the work that is expected of you

Make sure that they are not classes that are critical to the students career.

The course content would be best taught in a hands-on manner. Not all courses should be approved for distance learning just because the professor would prefer not to teach the course at all.

***** classes should not be online... period.

If a wimba classroom is going to be used the number of participants should be limited in order to have effective participation and interactions.

**** classes should not be online.

You must make yourself participate and stay on top of coursework.

keep the calender current, and dont make students have to get on every single day.

n/a

Maybe make the set up of online classes a little easier to get used to.

Just to make course den faster because sometimes the quizzes and tests are extremely slow and waiting for the questions to save or pop up uses alot of the available time.

Be more specific and more clear on directions/instructions concerning due dates, grading, and discussion boards.

Every online course should open all assignments at once with various closing dates. This way a student can complete the course at their own pace. Online classes that require weekly participation defeat the purpose of on-line convenience.

make it easies to understand class due dates

Nothing.

Find a way to make communication more real.

Be more clear on expectations.

online or on campus tutoring for this course

Have the professor a bit more involved to encourage other students to help each other. I asked about tutoring on campus and there was none for this course.

Cheaper tuition, you are ripping us of just becuase of convenience and no other reason. We are saving the school money by not being on campus.

Online courses are great as long as you are willing to put in the time and effort it takes to succeed.

Instructors post assignments on time and respond quicker to student concerns or questions.

The teacher should be readily available for the students if they are going to be in charge of the class.

none

Please make CourseDen more compatible with Internet Explorer. It's annoying to have to switch to Mozilla Firefox because CourseDen isn't responding to Internet Explorer. Also, WebCT has this irritating habit of 'kicking you out' of the classroom when you click on a file and try to download it the first time. You have to get back into the classroom and click on the file a second time to be able to open it. Surely, that is a technical glitch which can be fixed.

Have a professor who is willing and able to communicate quickly through email and who responds to student concerns in a timely manner.

I know that there are usually at least two face-to-face classes (in the beginning and the end of the semester). For those students like myself who enjoy both the independent aspect and human interaction, I suggest at least two additional but optional face-to-face classes during the semester, giving four opportunities for interaction with professor and peers.

If you're teaching an online course, the teacher should check emails ATLEAST once a day.

I enjoyed it, but you never quite know when an unexpected computer malfunction occurs.

less reading from the book

The only suggestion I would make, is the fact that even though the course is online, it doesn't mean that it is easier, and many professors add much more work that students can handle in a regular on-campus class. Not this class, but others! My professor was fantastic!

It would be helpful to have more specifics about assignments, especially the ones that are just left up to your creativity, such as the drawings. I had a lot of trouble with those, given my complete lack of artistic abilities.

Make the assignments available earlier so you can work ahead and not have to worry about it. It would just be nice if you could do a little extra to get ahead if you have something coming up in the week.

I'm not sure because my experience with this course has been outstanding.

Standardize videoplayer use. Ensure class population can access appropriate player prior to class start date.

I cannot think of any.

I don't know how many people were in this class but it seemed that some didn't participate in the discussions so they weren't very fruitfull. So I guess you could try something to get more people into discussing a topic.

not a thing.

none at this time

I noticed that some students were arguing under the discussion post for questions about the course. This was because the professor never seemed to anwser the student's questions on time. I'm not sure if he was too busy with other classes or did not check his online class regularly. I think that having the professor sign onto the online course daily should be a must, just like it is for the students.
