Fall 2009 Distance Education Survey
(Student Comments)
Question
24: What did you dislike about the online portion of this
course?
|
|
·
none |
|
·
This course was fine to take online,
the professor was very quick to respond to questions and concerns. |
|
·
reduced feedback |
|
·
Sometimes it is difficult to communicate with professor. |
|
·
a lot of work |
|
·
the amount of work and
the book and software used for the class. |
|
·
A lot of busy work. |
|
·
Nothing. The instructor
was very responsive and tried to help me when I needed it in a timely manner. |
|
·
Nothing. |
|
·
I liked everything! |
|
·
Very time consuming. |
|
·
That alot of the material would have been easier to understand
if one could watch either a video with the instructor actually showing us how
to do some of the assignments with the new techniques instead of just using
the book to read and try to understand. |
|
·
The overall lack of face-to-face contact and communication you
have available with an in-class setting. |
|
·
Found it hard to contact teacher and get answers at certain time
regarding book work. |
|
·
The instructor was not as responsive to my emails as I would
have liked her to be. She replied back 3 to 5 days later. |
|
·
This survey doesn't ask enough class specific questions. Ms. Smith did not provide the class with
the standard evaluation forms, even though we all expected them. This class
was full of students who had an unpleasant experience with ABED
4118, more specifically with Ms. Smith.
Her tone and demeanor with students was extremely rude and she lacked
compassion and understanding. My
experience with Ms. Smith this semester was extremely poor. From the lack of clarity in presenting
assignments to her random subjectivity in grading, I can honestly say that
the class was conducted poorly. Her 'my
way or no way attitude' rubbed many students the wrong way, and she didn't
seem to care at all about the hostility that she had created within the
class. I can't say that guidance was
ever really provided. When students
sent an email, it usually took Ms. Smith more than a week to reply. By this time the assignments were due and
marked with the very errors that had been inquired about. |
|
·
Nothing. |
|
·
Working in groups outside of a classroom setting. |
|
·
Nothing |
|
·
I enjoyed it. There were no dislikes. |
|
·
Technology is hard and we were expected to know a lot already.
We really needed to meet 4 or 5 times (not on line, but in class). My husband
knows a lot about technology so he helped me. I then walked one of my teammates
through assignments. |
|
·
needed to meet with group member for final assignment - maybe we
could have a few classes at the campus |
|
·
The teacher |
|
·
NA |
|
·
Because this is an accounting class I didnt like the fact that
it was online. I feel we needed more guidance on some of the material. |
|
·
none |
|
·
Mr. Colley never replied to an email in a timely fashion. It
would take around 2 weeks for a reply. His online learning modules for the
class were hard to understand and hear him. His assignments were nowhere near
the realated subject for tests or quizzes. I do not recommend this teacher to
anyone and hope I never have to take another course with him. |
|
·
nothing |
|
·
Nothing. |
|
·
The course material was presented in a boring manner. |
|
·
I don't like how if you don't understand something, you're on
your own. |
|
·
The professor supposed that more work was needed to make up for
the fact that we don't attend class. |
|
·
Everything. I think it is unfair that she changed things over
the semester. |
|
·
There were still deadlines. I would like to be able to turn in
my work when I am able to get the work done. |
|
·
I couldn't get the one-on-one attention that I have normally
recieved. I wasn't able to ask simple questions like I would in a classroom.
Sure, I could send an email; but getting a reply in time was tricky. |
|
·
There was nothing that I disliked. |
|
·
Hated that there were only 2 test.
Hated the quiz shut you out if you started before the deadline but didn't
finish before the deadline. Hated the aplia multiple choice answers because
most of the time they all seemed CORRECT or didn't match with what the book
said. That made it difficult to know the correct answers. Hated the fact that
the FIRST test was after the drop date. what kind of
mess is that. What if i failed it big time and couldn't make up. Lord knows
aplia would help in that situation. This was my first and probably my last
online class. Thanks UWG. Also thanks for charging me out of state tuition
next semester after i been her 3 semesters already. Kennesaw State
University...here i come or maybe Georgia State. Which ever don't charge out
of state for a student who's parents been here 20
years and i for 1 1/2 years. |
|
·
That the aplia work is due on sunday night |
|
·
way too difficult |
|
·
nothing |
|
·
The questions on the online exams were rather lengthy and I felt
there was not enough alloted time. |
|
·
The professor held online chat sessions from 10-11. It was impossible for me and probably
others to attend the sessions because we were working. |
|
·
The online tests were difficult! |
|
·
I don't have any complaints about it. |
|
·
Nothing. It was another great semester at UWG |
|
·
I did not have anything that I disliked. |
|
·
nothing |
|
·
I had some questions about the chapter on assessment (the
numbers associated with the tests, some of the concepts) that I would have
benefitted from hearing further discussion. |
|
·
nothing |
|
·
I felt like I was teaching myself from the textbook. |
|
·
Its a lot of work. The
questions on the tests weren't always as clear as I'd like, but they were
good. |
|
·
There was not as much instructor interaction as a am accustomed to. |
|
·
Nothing |
|
·
nothing that I can think of really bothers me about on line classes. I
wish there was a way to virtually talk to your teacher or have a live chat
session that teachers can dedicate to students and teach different problems
through chat |

I was too advanced with microsoft programs

|
·
the school's internet
connection was not helpful it would lose the connection randomly and would
delay my progress on the assignment. the assignments
instructions would sometimes not be helpful. i would
have to do some of the assignment on my own knowledge and would not recieve
full credit because something was not explained well in the instructions. |
|
·
I do not have any compliants about the online portion of this
course. |
|
·
This course required you to use MS Vista, and I have Windows 7,
so I was prepared to use the computers on campus, but there is only 1 room
available for less than 2 hours a week that has computers with Vista on them,
so I didn't like that. |
|
·
Plenty of work |
|
·
Some of the test questions were not in the information given to
me and I sometimes found it hard to find the answers to those questions. |
|
·
Some of the assignments should be practical rather than
theoretical. |
|
·
There wasn't that in person teacher contact daily. |
|
·
Nothing, this is the second time I've taken this class. The
first time was all in class. I made an 'F'. But this time with the class
completely online, I've made all A's and higher. With class online you depend
on yourself to learn the information not someone standing in front of you. |
|
·
that i forgot about stuff being due at times |
|
·
nothing really. |
|
·
nothing at all. it was perfectly suited to my schedule and allowed me
to do my work at my pace |
|

|
·
its harder to teach yourself |
|
·
I did not dislike anything about this course. |
|
·
Nothing. |
|
·
I didn't have any dislikes. |
|
·
Extremely poor instruction.
The material is straight forward and easy to comprehend. However, the class structure was
technologically dense and sloppy. For
example, having to access the 'daily notes,' daily by downloading an updated
word doc, when web CT has an announcements function, showed a lack of effort
to act on the subject matter taught int he course; the use of
technology. The web cast
are lacking, superficial and unrepresentative of the ridged excessive
nature of the tests. CISM 3330 with
Douglas Turner is quite simply the worst class I have taken at UWG. |
|
·
I don't think that it is good use of money to be forced to take
a class that requires the student to make a YouTube video as part of the
coursework. I could see a course like
being offered as an elective, but I am frustrated that my limited funds had
to be used for this course (mostly just that assignment) when it could have
gone towards something more pertinent in the business field. |
|
·
testing in-class |
|
·
Dr.*** needs to update his videos. It is wrong for his
videos referring to websites are not up-to-date. As a student, to turn in a project that is
not current is unacceptable. This same principle should be applied to
professors as well. With some of the Course Den material not current all it
did was take away from the main benefit of an online course, becuase it made
you go into his office (I commute 60 miles round trip) for clarification.
|
|
·
The tests are very difficult |
|
·
No face to face contact with the instructor for help. |
|
·
Meaning the deadlines can be overwelming if you dont keep on top
of things |
|
·
Using the workbooks |

Sometimes face to face instructor conversation is needed. That was my only concern. |

|
·
The way the dates were discussed. The dates should be listed in
the syllabus. |
|
·
nothing really |
|
·
It was easy to forget about completeting an assignment. At the beginning of this course I completed
all of my assignments at least a week or even two weeks before they were due
and it allowed me to go back and make corrections if i needed to do so to get
a perfect score. Towards the end I was
submitting the assignments the day before they were due which really made me
focus harder on making everything absolutely correct to get a perfect
score. But it was a learning
experience taking this online class. |

in this class. |
|
·
This course entailed quite a bit of information which I feel
needs to be taught some face to face.
The book and likns were very confusing. There was a LOT of material and formulas
that needed to be learned and there are always simpliar ways to learn
these. The online book and links did
not clarify how to work the problems.
YOu just were given the anwers to check yours and not any steps to
follow so it was very hard to try to figure out where you were going wrong. |

just book resources |
|
·
It wasn't the course but the nature of self study on new subject
matter. The initial learning curve and understanding takes a few times
reviewing the material. Then the professor brings it all together with
understanding and clarity. |

At times, it can be difficult to 'teach' yourself. The instructor was Extremely
helpful but sometimes it is hard to know what to ask, or how to phrase a
question when it is typed verses asked in person. |
|
·
its hard |
|
·
I disliked my teacher he was unfair in grading and barely taught
the class. The stuff that he went over in class did not help the students to
understand the homework and he graded the homework hard and did not give
partial credit for showing how you got to that answer and he only used excel
to teach the class but on the exams you could not use excel to get the answer
so you were in trouble. |

It would be helpful to have PPT's and materials for class
seminars available for downloading a few days prior to the actual class. |

·
There were a few times that I could not access information that
I needed from my home computer. I was
only able to access from work (through a different program) after clicking
around to find things. |
|
·
Up until now, the majority of my post secondary work has been
done fact-to-face. That is what I am most comfortable with. |
|
·
Due to system or other issues, we seemed to stop using CourseDen
very much for a few months. The
resource should be used continuously throughout the program. |

Initially, figuring our how to submit assisgnments and navigate
those requirements. But it got easier once our professor explained the

I don't like that the entire class was online. I feel that I
learn better when someone is physically talking to me. It is too easy to use
another window to find answers for quizzes and tests - which does not force
you to truly learn the material. I know you should take it upon yourself to
learn it, but with all the other classes demanding the same, having a way to
'shortcut' the work becomes convenient at the time, but not beneficial in the
long run. I don't think anything can replace face-to-face classes. |

Some of the questions on the quizes and assignments required
floating point calculation, but we had not agreed on a standard method for
handling significant digits and roundoffs.
So answers submitted in floating point format were sometimes counted
wrong incorrectly. I suggest multiple
choice answers -- this doesn't have to make the question too easy. Also, some answers that were counted wrong
were actually right. So, my biggest complaint would be with the automatic
grading. |

It seemed that the assignments often repeated themselves and
students were asked to the same or similar tasks throughout the semester.

|
·
The time frame |
|
·
Teacher took a bit longer than expected for returning grades for
assignments submitted. |
|
·
It was very difficult to get in touch with the teacher. I
emailed her several times and I never once received a reply. I had another
class during her office hours so the only way for me to contact her was
through email. Assignments were posted late and I was unsure of what was
expected.I have had online classes before and this is the worst experience I
have ever had. If the teacher was going to past assignments late than an
email letting the class know would have been appreciated. I too was dealing
with issues this semester but I was still able to get online and check for
homework that was never posted. I was extremely frustrated with this class.
Also I do not feel that grades were received in a timely manner. |
|
·
Grades were to slow getting back to us! |
|
·
EVERYTHING! My teacher did not put assignments up in a timely
manner. If we had questions she was not in her office to access her. I
emailed my teacher several times and she never responded. Not enough
information was provided for assignments. I learned nothing. And I struggled the whole time I did this. course. |
|
·
There were a lot of videos that were extremely long that didn't
have much to do with the content of what we were learning. A lot of the websites and videos, I felt
were unrelated to the topic. |
|
·
The fact that my teacher did not respond to any of my emails and
did not post any of my grades or assignments for over a month! I also did not
even use the book she had on the syllabus! |
|
·
Not knowing who I was in class with to put a face to a name. |
|
·
The teacher!!!!! |
|
·
It seemed like towards the middle of the semester Dr. **** stopped posting assignments and contacting us concerning what was going on.
For weeks, we had no clue if she was alright or what was happening with the
course. I found this to be very irresposible. Also, it seemed that when she
did re-establish communication with us (with about 3 weeks left in the
semester) there were many assignments posted that expected us to catch up
with the weeks that were missed.

Teacher not availible |
|
·
The teacher did not keep grades updated in a timely manner. Also, although I did not mind, there were
about 4 to 5 weeks that there were no assignments, no correspondence. I understand that life happens, and we
all go through different things in our lives.
I think the teacher could have responded and kept us informed about
what was happening. |
|
·
I was not able to talk to other stuendes fact to face, but the advantages of online
courses are great. |
|
·
This should not be called a course but an execution of busy work
to receive college credit. There was
nothing I needed from this course and nothing I couldn't of
didn't figure out without assistance from the instuctor. Instuctor was missing for three weeks
without known reason students were concernec and I personally called many
numbers in the department without answer.
No I did not leave a message.
This is the most unprofessional manner course I have been involved
in. The fact that you charge extra for
an online course that provide significantly less value than a regular couse
compounds my frustration. This is one
course that I feel has been completely useless and the University has actually
taken my money and provided nothing of value in return. |
|
·
I didn't like the fact that if I was completing work at night
and had a question, I had to wait until someone else was online to ask for
help. |
|
·
I would have prefered some sort of e-mail notices about changes
or some sort of e-mail warning when a task is due. In a face-to-face class
there is often a warning, at least a week before, that something is due. |
|
·
I could procrastinate longer. |
|
·
Slow teacher help and slow grading. |
|
·
The instructor. She never returns emails, piled on a ton of
assignments after going MIA for six weeks, and doesn't give thorough
explanations toward any of the assignments. I am very very very displeased
with this course, not the material so much, but the instructor should be
fired. If I miss six weeks of work and didn't tell anyone anything I know I
would get fired. |
|
·
the work can be time consuming |
|
·
I disliked that the professor wasn't available when I needed
help with assignments. I disliked that several emails that I sent her never
received a response. |
|
·
The instructor never returned emails and offered very little
help. |
|
·
The teacher was not very helpful, for an online course. |
|
·
I did not like the fact that e-mails were not answered and
grades were not given when we needed feed back from the last assignment to do
the next assignment appropriately. i also did not
like the lack of communication from teacher ot students when it was needed. |

I did not dislike anything about this course. |
|
·
There was more work than there should be for a 2 credit course.
I spent more hours on this class than all of the classes I have taken, with
the exception of 1. I believe the course work was designed on a student that
had knowledge in the areas, not students that were learning. |
|
·
The hardest part for me was learning all the new information |
|
·
there was nothing that I disliked. |
|
·
I did not like when the system would go down every other Friday
and I would have work due. |
|
·
My likes and dislikes overlap here. Though I liked the fact that I didn't have
to drive all the way to Carrollton each week, I think I am someone who
benefits more from a face-to-face class session. Therefore, not having that face-to-face
interaction is something I disliked about the course. |

I liked it all |

None |
|
·
I liked the course and would not change anything. |
|
·
THere was alot of work with 2 other classes. Some of the links did not work. |
|
·
That a lot of the programs were not functioning correctly. Also,
the instructor was difficult to get in contact with when difficulties did
occur. The program that was half our grade was out of date. Trying to take
what we learned and applying to updated software was a challenge. |
|
·
Not enough instruction on assignments, espcially the important
ones. |
|
·
Nothing |
|
·
Technical issues |
|
·
TECHNICAL PROBLEMS! TECHNICAL PROBLEMS! TECHNICAL PROBLEMS! This
kind of course shouldnt be an online course, I dont think the problems
technically were anticipated. It is very frustrating when you have problems
technically and it's by no fault of your own and its
almost impossible to resolve them, so in an effort to attempt not to get
behind you mosey on and try and come back but you still experience the same
problem. Although the instructor handled many of the problem, UWG technical
assistance were hard to connect with. I would never take this type of course
online again. |
|
·
It's easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer abstractness of an
online class. |
|
·
I think this class needs to meet face to face more than 2 times. |
|
·
SAM was annoying at first, but once you get the hang of it, it
gets better. |
|
·
I like face-to-face interaction as well as doing some work
online.I like the class to be half online and half face-to-face. I think this
interaction is the best for me. I don't like that I feel like I'm teaching myself
while taking this online class opposed to the professor being involved more
in my learning. |
|
·
Sometimes it was frustrating that other students didn't seem to
participate fully or in a timely manner to discussions. I also think that one of the things I've
realized that face to face interactions fosters is networking in your future
field, which is difficult to do in an online learning environment. |
|
·
When I wanted immediate answers to my questions. |
|
·
Sam was boring. |
|

nothing |
|

There was absolutely too much work and too many assignments. The
SAM quizzes were too long and there were too many. |

Not getting face-to-face time with other students and teachers. |
|
·
The material was very confusing at times and it would have been
very helpful to have more face-to-face meetings. |
|
·
When I had questions it was difficult to get them answered. At
times I felt bogged down by problems I was having in the course. |
|
·
Nothing. I was able to

|
·
I didn't find a dislike for this course. |
|
·
Too many different places to look for assignments...I would get
confused or miss somethings. Too many discussion board submissions. |
|
·
I did not like the pressure of meeting F2F. There can be
situations where you may not be able to attend and yet it is insisted you
must make the F2F classes or lose grades. Some of the directions for
assignments were confusing because they were in different places and at times
had different due dates. Not all assignments were posted on the calendar. If
you did not check the class handout you would not know that some assignments
were due. Also there are too many forms to fill out for the field experience
which makes it confusing. I also found the course load to be extremely heavy.
Many of my friends in the class found it hard to keep up with the work as I
did as well. |

Liked webcam and wimba communication tool, however, felt that

these webcam meetings were not conducted efficiently. |

The instructor was very difficult to communicate with
online. She was very vague in her
reasons about why points were taken off assignments. Also, I once submmitted a question to her
about an assignment two days before it was due. However, she did not respond to my question
until the day after the assignment was due.
I feel that if a student makes an attempt to ask questions about an
assignment, those questions need to be answered before the assignment is
due. I also feel that if points are
taken off an assignment, the students needs to receive specific reasons about
why points are taken away, especially if the student e-mails the teacher
asking why. The instructor of this
course is not very 'user friendly.'
Her comments still leave students with questions, and I feel that she
did not give timely feedback. Most of
the assignments I turned in were not graded for over one month after they
were submitted. |

I have found in all of my University of West Ga. classes that
professors organize information on Course Den differently. That is fine and reflects the individuality
of the professor and subject matter; however, sometimes information is not clearly
organized. For example, in Dr. *****
course, I would first go to the directions to complete assignment. Then later I would find that slightly
different directions would be on the assignment dropbox. Then I found a folder for rubrics, and the
rubric would have more or different information about the task. It would be helpful if all information
available about one assignment would be in one place.
|

·
I did not like the pressure of having to meet F2F. There could
be situations that come up where you cannot make it and yet it is insisted
that you attend or you lose grades. There are too many field experience
forms. It makes it confusing. Also I have had several discussions with other
classmates and we found the work load too heavy. Many of us work full time
and have children and we found it difficult to keep up with the weekly
assignments that were due. Also there are too many places to check for
instructions and what's due that at times some of the information was

The instructor of this course seemed out of touch with the
reality of his students lives. Much of the work assigned seemed to by busy
work and not very meaningful for the overall knowledge acquisition. One
example would be that within a weeks time we would
have to read three articles and a chapter from the text. Then we were given
from Monday to Thursday to post our discussions and make 3 to 5 responses to
other peoples posts for each reading. This is 12 to
20 responses. Most of the people that I got to know through the course were
teachers and parents. Our weekday lives are extremely busy and not allowing
us to get this done through the weekend shows a lack of understanding of our
lives. In addition 12 to 20 responses in addition to the 4 posts was excessive and unnecessary. Instead of reading others
posts and creating a meaningful and helpful response everyone was glancing at
posts and making a quick comment. These things were brought to the instructors attention but unanswered. |
|
·
I felt that we were given very short deadlines on discussions,
etc. Getting a discussion prompt late on Monday night for all readings and
postings to be completed by Thursday is a little ridiculous. One of the
benefits of an online course is flexibility, but I felt that this course
didn't offer very much flexibility. It seemed that the professor had very
little compassion for the lives that we lead outside of the classroom (both
as teachers and learners) and assigned a lot of tedious work/discussions. I
am taking two online courses right now, and this class definitely required
far more work than my other one. |

Everything related to Dr. ****. He is a joke. His instructions are in broken

I have had at UWG. I received my

finished. I would never, I repeat
never take another class with him. You
need to correct this situation before he brings down the entire program. I now recommend this program to my friends
with the caveat of NOT taking any course he teaches. He is not UWG material, IMO.

We did almost everything on line, thus the MANY times we had to

I CANNOT stand not meeting face to face for class, and
unfortunately this course is only offered online. This class is for educators who are
people-persons by nature. It never seemed
natural to require in-depth discussions of ideas on a bulletin board posting;
there is always a certain amount of ambiguity. Unfortunately, I have not been stimulated
at all by this course. Additionally,
this class should not be required for people who received their Bachelors in
Middle Grades Ed. from UWG because this has been a complete repeat of several
classes I took while in Block. I also
dislike the fact that I did not get to know my professor or any of my
classmates. It is impossible to forge
relationships in an online class, at least in the
manner this one was conducted. I
thought grad classes were the chance to really develop closeness with
professors and other professionals. I
have not had that opportunity. I really thought I would have gotten more out
of this course, but I was wrong. |

I personally like face to face interaction so it was more

Most of the time Dr. **** did not explain the assignments well
so we wasted a lot of time trying to figure out what we were to do. And after the first few weeks he did not
answer emails or answer us on the discussion board any more. Most of the examples he gave did not
work. Links to sites did not
work. Dr.*** did not give any help
after the first few weeks on assignments.
It was like he gave up on the class at that point. This was the worst online class that I have
taken as far as knowing what I was to do and how to do it. Most of the time I did not get a clear idea
of what he was looking for and if you did not do it as he expected he gave

extra credit assignments without giving credit for it or acknowledging that
we even did it. This class lacked a

Courseden and WW. There were several
times multiple assignments were to be submitted in Courseden under one
submission, this was not made clear until after the posting was made, then it
was closed and the rest of the assignments could not be posted. Understanding exactly what the instructor
wanted from the assignments was difficult at times and it took a while for
the instructor to email back with answers to questions. There were also many

Too many assignments. It
is time consuming compared to traditional classroom setting. I was lost at the begginning of the semester
because I did not know anything about on-line classes. It took me a while to figure out what was
expected of me. Some of my grades have
been affected because of that. |

There was nothing I disliked about the online portion of this

person could have easily been done online as well. I'm not sure why the
course was not 100% online. |

She did not give us enough of a time slot to take online tests.
She would only give us 24 hours and with so much going on, it was hard to

as quickly as I would have liked. |

The interaction with fellow students. |

It is somewhat difficult getting to know your professor
personality. |
|
·
There is some benefit to being in a room with the teacher and
other class members in that you can hear their opinions and input. |
|
·
This course probably should not have been taught in a 100%
online format. I do not believe that having this course online has benefited
my knowledge and skills related to my program of study. I think it would have
been more beneficial as a face-to-face course or a course that met more
throughout the semester. |

this particular class is one on the first classes that need to be
taken for my program and offer a lot of information that was difficult to
learn all on line. The class would work well to actually go to classes on
campus. |
|
·
It was frustrating in the beginning. I sometimes
would find that I missed a piece of the assignment when I thought I
was finished but I managed to always realize this in just enough time to meet
my due date. This taught me to look through all of my materials very
carefully with the thought in mind that there may be a question worth
additional points towards my final grade! |

I have said this several times, but it is very hard to
contribute to 2 classmates' discussion posts (as we're always required to do)
when the information the classmate posted was factual. Discussions happen when there is room to
discuss theories and opinions...not facts.
Questions such as 'what is' and 'what are' do not lead to easy discussion. |

POOR communication on behalf of the professor. She did not answer emails efficiently. The syllabus was a disaster- it was never

How are students supposed to be effective and learn if there are no
clear instrucions or guidelines? How
are the students supposed to know what to do if the professor doesn't know
what she's doing? |
