Summer 2003 Distance Evaluation Survey (Student Comments)
Question 16: What suggestions would you make for
future online courses?
|
q
limit
the number of students to allow more time for everyone to participate |
|
q
Less
people in one class |
|
q
more
teacher directed |
|
q
Less
people in classes. |
|
q Post more of the course content
online so that the class doesn't have so many 2 hour chats. Chats are useful but posting some of the content will allow more
flexibility. |
|
q Instructor having a pre-prepared
agenda for the chat. Outlining the
day’s discussions. A PowerPoint presentation would be great to follow along with during
discussions. |
|
q
Clearer
definition of grade. Better
organization by instructor. |
|
q
None |
|
q The teacher would stay in the
class during the hours our class is meeting not in his office and he wasn't ever there so I only used the assistants help |
|
q
Instead
of assignments being due every day
make it at the end of the week. |
|
q
Maybe
do more with the web site and modules and less chapter exercises. I learned more from the modules |
|
q
none |
|
q Make certain all chapter lesson
quizzes are done the same. The first
four chapters are set up differently than the remaining chapters. If this is going to remain unchanged then notify the students
on the first day of class about the change. |
|
q
Make
it a little more enjoyable with fun exercises. |
|
q To have a way to communicate with
others when they are on the computer.
For example the way AOL has instant messaging.
This way we could ask another student a question and hopefully receive
an answer then. |
|
q
Make
sure everything is running perfectly. |
|
q Although the program software is
good while studying the lessons the program should allow you to see the names of the icons when running the mouse over
them as you are becoming familiar with the particular program
like say Access (when in the "let me try" mode). |

|
q
The

you need to. |
|
q more real time chats with the

I
think courses should meet the first time on campus and maybe one more time in
the middle of the course. |
|
q
Meeting
twice at the beginning of the session was helpful |
|
q
Have
interactions among students even if
it is on-line. |
|
q
The
ability to use another program other than word. |
|
q Make sure that at least some
meetings (2-3) are held face to face particularly at the beginning of the course. It is
extremely helpful! |

q for professors to be quick to
respond to the work sent like Dr.
Putney was for this class. I felt
more comfortable knowing that she would respond to the work
sent within 24 hours sometimes
less. It was commendable because she had so many (70+) in the
class! |

WebCT
is a great course tool. Keep it up! |
|
q
Have
the password and i.d. in large print and easier to find. |
|
q Make sure the bookstore knows all
the course numbers so they can assist long distance learners. The only problems I had were logistics such as getting
registered. I am a transient student
and I talked to five people who transferred me to someone else
and everyone told me something different. It was very disconcerting and time consuming. I then called the bookstore and they said
there was not a book and no one would assist me on how to get online. The first few days of this class I spent in tears.
There needs to be a better intro to online!!!! Maybe on the main West GA page. The staff also needs to be more aware of what is going on
with registering etc. so that
students are not confused and being told five different things. |
|
q

q I addition to the lessons there
should be a helpful guide on how to go about gathering the necessary information for the class. |

We

Assignment

|
q
I
can't think of any. |
|
q I would appreciate more hands-on
remedial computer help. The computer
lab attendants are only there to help you with specific problems and not to help
you learn how to use the computer itself.
If there are other places to get this kind of help I haven't heard about them. Maybe there could be organized labs that people could attend if we are having
trouble or just want to work with other humans. |

On-line

|
q
None. |
|
q
Provide
more courses online. |
|
q
Encourage
teachers to maximize their use of any face-to-face or GSAMS time for actual
teaching. Courses that are 50% or more
online don't really have time for spending FtF or GSAMS time on students presentations |
|
q None |

|
q Have Bellsouth keep the network
running. |
|
q
I
took a course online with Jason Academy.
They posted the work at the beginning of the week questions at the end and you answered and posted your responses
by the following Monday. I liked that because you had the
flexibility of completing your work on various days or nights based on your schedule but it was regular enough that it kept you
on track. |

q N/A |

|
q I prefer the GSAMS method to the
total online. |

|
q We need more of them for those of
us who work 8-5 12 months of the
year!! :) |
|
q Get Web CT to respond a little
more quickly to first clicks! |
|
q Think about the projects that are
assigned and how you want them completed. |
|
q more of them |
|
q I think you are doing a good job. I don't have any suggestions you haven't
already thought of. |
|
q Perhaps one group project per
semester per course in an online course |
|
q No suggestions |
|
q ask Dr. Bennett for advice... she
knows how to do it WELL!!!! |
|
q
I
think that a middle-of-the-course class meeting should be scheduled by the
instructor so that the whole experience isn't just
tech. |
