* Distance Education Leadership for the New Century

Schools and colleges in the new millennium need leaders who have reflected on their experiences and internalized understandings about their own capacity to lead. This should apply no less to those in leadership roles in distance education settings within those institutions. The intended purpose here is to better understand the role and impact of leadership in distance education settings, examine recent research and writing in this area, and identify research lacunae needing further investigation; offer insights and suggestions for “Best Practices” to those involved in, or aspiring to leadership roles; and generate increased interest in the study of distance education leadership.

* Recruitment and Development of Online Adjunct Instructors

Online adjunct faculty can be local to the institution, or in some cases residing at a distance from the institution for which they are teaching. The latter requires careful management. Despite the size and geographic personnel base of the adjunct program, there are several operational elements that provide the basis for a comprehensive and organized online adjunct program. This paper will present an overview of the adjunct recruitment, development, and evaluation process, highlighting the issues and challenges.

* A Framework for Design and Evaluation of Internet-Based Distance Learning Courses

The purpose of this paper is to propose a framework for the development and evaluation of online distance learning courses, based on integrating an adaptation of Tyler’s principles within the levels of cognitive learning in Bloom’s Taxonomy. The methodologies for delivery of course materials and evaluation of outcomes specific to online distance learning are discussed. Examples are suggested to achieve each learning level objective. The framework will then be functionally evaluated by applying it to a currently available online course.

Current Trends in Distance Education: An Administrative Model

Current practices and procedures of distance education programs at selected institutions in higher education in Ohio were studied. Relevant data was found in the areas of: (1) content of the distance education program's mission statement; (2) needs assessment procedures; (3) student demographics; (4) course acquisition, development, and evaluation criteria and procedures; (5) hierarchical approval of courses; (6) delivery systems; (7) selection of distance education course instructors; (8) distance education course teaching/management procedures; (9) matriculation of distance learners; (10) budgeting; (11) marketing procedures; and (12) formative and summative evaluation of the individual courses and the entire distance education program. This research has led to the development of an Distance Learning Adminstrative Operational Model.

Innovations in Distance Learning Program Development and Delivery

Delivering high-quality instruction requires innovation in program development and delivery.   This article examines the use of merging technologies in the delivery of learner-based instruction, the development of collaborative teaching environments that maximize the efforts of faculty content experts, and the implementation of databases to manage electronic course materials at two large public universities...

A Cross Sectional Review of Theory and Research in Distance Education

The field of distance education raises many questions which encompass the spectrum of human and technological questions of interest to those of us who practice various forms of distance education. As doctoral students in the field of distance education, we were interested in developing a systematic approach for studying the current problems in this diverse field. We organized the literature into the seven research categories of research including conceptualization, learners and learning, technology and designing instruction for distance education, faculty in distance education, policy, administration and management, institutional contexts, and international contexts.
