1. Introduction - What is Course Genie
1. Why Use Course Genie to create Learning Modules.
Course Genie is a simple tool for Microsoft Word that will convert your Word documents into HTML pages for your WebCT class or personal web site. With only a few clicks you can turn your documents into fully functional web site. Course Genie is designed to help you create online content quickly with no fuss. Course Genie can be used to convert any document however, you will find that with a little planning your class will be ready in just a few minutes. While Microsoft word can create HTML pages from your word documents, the code that is created is cannot be edited by the WebCT HTML editor making it very difficult to make minor modifications to your course documents.
The first thing that you will need to do is download the software. There are two files that you will need to download to your computer. One is zip file for the actual software. The second is a zip file containing the software license which you will need to get from the Distance Education office. Click on the link below and save the file to your desktop.
Request License Key for Course Genie
First locate the file that you downloaded, it should be named cg_install.zip and double click it. This will bring up a window with a list of files, locate the file 'setup.exe'. This will launch the install program for course genie. Follow the instructions on during on the screen to install course genie.
Once you have installed the Course Genie software you will need to install the license key. Open the file that you received from the Distance education office called cg_liscense.zip. This will show you a list of files that you will need to copy to your hard drive. You will need to find the Course Genie installation directory on your computer. Open 'My Computer and click on the C drive ___> program files ____>Course Genie. Copy the files key.enc and liscense.dat to this directory. You are now ready to use course genie.
Course Genie is designed to turn Microsoft documents into html files that can be viewed and edited using WebCT.
Course Genie has several functions that are outside the scope of this document, for instructions on these advanced features please consult the course genie help files. The guide below details the process of creating a simple document.
1. Open the word doc you wish to convert to HTML and start Course Genie. Course Genie can be found in the Tools menu of Microsoft Word.
2. Now that you have Course Genie open you will be able to access the different CG styles. Click on the Format menu button and select Styles and Formatting. This will display the different formats available for your document.

3. The first thing to do is select the Title for the HTML pages. This will be the title for your HTML document. Find the title on your word doc and highlight it. Once you have done that find the cgPageTitle style from the style menu.

nce you have the settings dialog box open, click on the Navigation
tab and Uncheck Create Index Page. Also Uncheck the add Navigation
button Options.

6. Now click on the Content tab and make sure that Normal Html is selected. If you would like to create a Learning Module using Course Genie you will need to select the WebCT IMS option. Once that is done click the ok button on the bottom of the dialog box. (Do not use the WebCt specific html option)
7. You are now ready to create your html files. On the Course Genie Menu select “Generate Course”. A dialog box will pop up asking for a location on your hard drive to save the output files. Select the appropriate directory and click ok.
8. Once Course Genie has finished converting your document to html you will be able to preview the output. You have now created a basic html page that can be uploaded to WebCT vista and added to one of your learning modules.
(If you created a Learning Module Package the file name will contain a _IMSWCT suffix, for example my class_IMSWCT.zip)

Course Genie provides an easy to use interface for creating learning modules for WebCT Vista that you can then edit using the Vista Tools. This enables you to create the majority of your course in MS Word and edit it in Vista without having to upload multiple documents. This method allows you to upload one file and manage the rest from within the Vista interface.
Once you have created a Learning module in Course Genie, you are now ready to upload it. If you need help creating a Learning Module from your document refer here.
1. Logon on to WebCT Vista and open the class that you want to add your learning module too.
2. Now you will need to click on the Content Import Link at the top of the screen. This will bring up the content import box
Click on the My Computer Icon to locate your content file that you created using Course Genie. Once you have located file click ok on the dialog box and import the file into your class.
3. Now you will need to add the learning module. On the tools menu on the left hand side of the screen click on the "Learning Module" link.

In the Box below you will see the Learning Module that you just imported. Once you have selected your learning module in the inventory box you can click the add selected button.
Your new learning module is now added to your main page and ready to be edited.
