Creating an Online Glossary

Good Teaching Practice

As people are learning any new subject, they will come into contact with words they are unfamiliar with. Putting a glossary online allows them to search for words that they are unfamiliar with.

Add the Glossary Tool

To use the glossary tool in our course, we must first add it.

  1. In Designer Mode, click Add Page or Tool on the right side of the screen.
  2. From the list of tools, choose Glossary under Course Content Tools. .
  3. On the following screen fill in:
    A name for the glossary.
    Click the checkbox next to on an Organizer Page, and choose Homepage from the drop down box.
  4. Click Add.

Viewing the Glossary

Once the glossary has been added, users can find the word they are looking for based on the first letter of the word.

Making a Glossary Entry

The glossary tool does not contain any words when you add it. Therefore we will have to create our own glossary entries.

  1. Choose the Designer Options view.
  2. Choose the Glossary from the home page.
  3. Click on Add keyword under Options on the right side.


On the new screen, you will fill out information about the glossary entry.


  1. Enter a Keyword.
  2. Enter a definition.
  3. Click Add.

Linking To A Page In A Content Module

If you have a specific term in your glossary that goes with a certain page in your content module you can link them together.

1. On your course menu on the left side, click the Course Content link.

2. Click on the file's name that you want to add the term to.

3. Select the Glossary link under action menu.
4. Put a checkmark beside the word that you just created as a keyword.
Then, on the right hand side of the page click the Page links button.
5. You will want to select the radio button that matches the word that you want to link in the page.
6. Scroll down to the end of the page and click Update.
7. Click on Homepage in your Course Menu or Breadcrumbs to return to your main page.
8. Click on the Course Content link in your Course Menu.
9. Click on the View tab.
10. Click on the file name that you added the link to.
11. Click on the linked word in your content page file.
12. The glossary definition appears in a new window.
