Microsoft Service Pack 2
Follow the directions below to configure for use with CourseDen. Microsoft Service Pack 2 (SP2) comes with several features that can interfere with you successfully accessing CourseDen and the information you need to get from your course.
- Pop-up Blocker will prevent you from taking quizzes, using the discussion area and sending e-mails in CourseDen.
- Download Notifier/Blocker will prevent you from downloading, opening, or saving any course materials such as Power Point presentations, documents, etc.
- Firewall could prevent you from accessing CourseDen.
Pop-up blocker
You can either disable the pop-up blocker that comes with SP2, or you can allow pop-ups from http://*.view.usg.edu.
Disable pop-up blocker
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Under the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
- Click on the Privacy Tab.
- Un-check the box next to Block pop-ups (see Figure at right).
- Click OK.
Allow pop-ups
- Open Internet Explorer.
- Under the Tools menu select Pop-up Blocker and then Pop-up Blocker Settings.
- In the address of web site to allow box type in https://*.view.usg.edu and click Add.
- Click close at the bottom of the page.
Download Notifier/Blocker
There are 2 different solutions to this problem. You can either disable the download blocker, or you can take the extra steps every time you try to open something and allow the download.
To disable the download blocker: To stop blocking files and software downloads with the Information Bar
- Open Internet Explorer.
- On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
- On the Privacy tab, click Custom Level.
- Do one or both of the following:
To turn off the Information Bar for file downloads
- Open Internet Explorer.
- On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
- On the Security tab, then Custom Level.
- In the Downloads section of the list, under Automatic prompting for file downloads, click Enable.
(See image at right) - To turn off the Information Bar for ActiveX controls, in the ActiveX controls and plug-ins section of the list, under Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls, click Enable.
To allow a download
- Click on the warning box in the upper left hand side of your browser.
- Click Allow Download File.

Firewalls: to disable, or change the settings on the Firewall:
To allow access through the Firewall:
- Click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
- Click on Control Panel.
- Click on Security Center.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Windows Firewall.
- In the next screen, click on the Exceptions tab.
- Click on the Port button.
- Under Name, type in CourseDen.
- Under Port Number, type 8000.
- Click OK.
- Make sure CourseDen is checked.
- Click Ok again.
To turn the Firewall off:
- Click on the Start button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
- Click on Control Panel.
- Click on Security Center.
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Windows Firewall.
- Click the Off button.
- Click Ok.
