Browser Problems

Most of the problems people face, including login problems, when using CourseDen can be solved very easily by doing a browser tune-up before trying to login the first time. This needs to be done once on any non-campus computer you will be using. The following pages will walk you through correctly configuring your browser for use with CourseDen.

AOL Users
Mac Users
Windows Internet Explorer Users
Windows Netscape 7 or earlier Users (Netscape 8 is not yet supported)
Windows Mozilla Users
All Tel Users


AOL Help

You will not be able to access CourseDen using the AOL browser. To access CourseDen if you are an AOL user:

AOL Version 9:

  1. Click on the Settings icon. You will be presented with a list of options.
  2. Pop-up Controls - allows you to block or allow popup windows when you are using the AOL software to visit Web sites. CourseDen uses popups for some features, such as quizzing. Your instructor may have also added other popup links to their course materials. You can also access pop-up setting by entering AOL Keyword: Pop-up Controls.
  3. Internet (Web) Options - allows you to control other important browser settings. The settings box displayed is the same as the one for Internet Explorer with the exception of an AOL Browser Tab. From here you should make sure that the TopSpeed setting is set to Do Not Store Web Pages.
  4. Open a Private Chat by going to People >> Start Your Own Chat >> Private Chat >> enter any name for the chat >> Go Chat (This ensures AOL will believe you are active and will not time your session out, thereby disconnecting you).
  5. Minimize AOL.
  6. Open up Internet Explorer, Netscape, or another browser other than AOL.
  7. Follow the browser setup instructions for the browser you will be using.
  8. Continue the by following the browser tuneup directions for Internet Explorer , Netscape or Mozilla .

Configuring your Internet Explorer 5.x (Macintosh) Browser
  1. Select Preferences from the Explorer bar at the top of the screen.
  2. Click Java under the Web Browser heading.
  3. Make sure the Enable Java option is selected.
  4. Click Advanced under the Web Browser heading.
  5. Make sure the Always option is selected.
  6. Click Security Zones under the Web Browser heading.
  7. Click Custom .
  8. Click the Settings button.
  9. Select Prompt for username and password from the dropdown box.
  10. Click OK .
  11. Click Cookies under the Receiving Files heading.
  12. Click the Never Ask option from the dropdown box.
  13. Click OK .
  14. After making all of the above changes, quit the application and re-open it. The changes will now take effect.

Configuring your Internet Explorer (Windows) Browser

Sun Java 1.5_07 is recommemded. See How to Set Up Your Java. Depending upon your connection speed, this should only take a few minutes.

  1. Open the Internet Explorer browser.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Select Internet Options.
  4. Select the General tab , if its not already selected.
  5. Click on the Settings button under Temporary Internet Files heading.
  6. Select Every visit to the page.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Select the Security tab.
  9. Click the Custom Level button.
  10. Under the Miscellaneous category, locate Userdata persistence.
  11. Select Enabled.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Select the Privacy tab.
  14. Click and drag the slider bar to the Medium setting.
  15. Click Edit under the Web Sites heading.
  16. In the Address of Web site bar, type https://westga.view.usg.edu and https://*.view.usg.edu
  17. Click the Allow button.
  18. Click OK.
  19. Select the Connections tab.
  20. Click the LAN Settings button.
  21. Select Automatically detect settings.
  22. Click OK.
  23. Select the Advanced tab.
  24. Uncheck Show friendly HTTP error messages.
  25. Check Use Java.
  26. Uncheck Microsoft VM, if listed.
  27. Click OK.
  28. Configure for use with CourseDen - Click here for instructions.
  29. After making all of the above changes, close Internet Explorer and re-open it. The changes will now take effect.

Configuring your Netscape Browser(Windows)

Sun Java 1.5_05 must be installed on your computer for CourseDen to work. Click here for Sun Java installation instructions. Depending upon your connection speed, this should only take a few minutes.

  1. Open the Netscape browser.
  2. At the top of the browser, click Edit.
  3. Select Preferences.
  4. Click the arrow (triangle) to the left of Privacy & Security.
  5. Select Cookies.
  6. Select Enable cookies based on privacy settings.
  7. Click the View button.
  8. Under Level of Privacy, select medium.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Under Privacy & Security, select Popup Windows.
  11. If Block unrequested popup windows is selected, click Allowed Sites button.
  12. In the space at the top, enter u.view.usg.edu
  13. Click the Add button.
  14. Click OK.
  15. Click Advanced.
  16. Select Enable Java.
  17. Click the arrow (triangle) to the left of Advanced.
  18. Select Scripts & Plugins.
  19. Check Navigator.
  20. Under Advanced, select Cache.
  21. Select Every time I view the page.
  22. Click OK.
  23. Configure for use with CourseDen - Click here for instructions.
  24. After making all of the above changes, close Netscape and re-open it . The changes will now take effect.

Configuring your Mozilla (Windows) Browser

Sun Java 1.5_05 must be installed on your computer for CourseDen to work. Click here for Sun Java installation instructions.

  1. Open the Mozilla browser.
  2. From the Tools menu select Options.
  3. In the left-hand pane, select Privacy.
  4. Click the + sign next to Cookies.
  5. Make sure the Enable cookies for the originating website only checkbox is selected.
  6. In the left-hand pane, select Web features.
  7. If Block Popup Windows is checked, click Add Site button.
  8. Type westga.view.usg.edu in the box.
  9. Click OK.
  10. Check Enable Java.
  11. Check Enable JavaScript.
  12. Click OK.
  13. Configure Microsoft Service Pack 2 (SP2) by clicking here.
  14. After making all of the above changes, close Mozilla and re-open it. The changes will now take effect. If you installed Java, then you will need to restart your computer.

All Tel Users

To access Vista, All Tel suggests you turn your Router firewall settings to low or off.

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Go to Tools ->Internet Options -> Connections.
  3. Click the LAN Settings button at the bottom and uncheck Automatic.
  4. Once that is done, please choose the browser you are using from the list below to complete your configuration process
