ENGL 2000 (American Speech) Spring Semester 2006 Final Speech Presentation
Presentations will take place May 1-2, 2006. Presentation dates/times are listed below. All presentations will take place in TLC 1112 (our assigned classroom). Please make sure you arrive promptly at the start of the hour since others will be participating in your group. You must complete your presentation and remain for the other presentations in your group in order to receive full credit for this assignment.
Topic: You may choose any topic covered in chapters 15-22 in your textbook, American Speech. Your presentation should be long enough to fit the time limits listed below. Your presentation does not need to cover material from an entire chapter; rather, it can focus on a specific aspect of one chapter. This presentation will assess your ability to take new information, organize it into a well-arranged presentation will illustrative examples, and present it in a professional / academic setting.
Setting: Your presentation will be done in groups of 5-6. You will be responsible for presenting your own material to the group and (when you are not presenting) assessing the presentations of others in your group. You will be given an assessment sheet in advance to help you with the assessment process.
Guidelines Assessment will consist of the following elements: I. Time: Your presentation should last 4-6 minutes. I will time each presentation and will deduct points if you exceed your allotted time. You should practice your presentation in advance, so that you have some idea of the time it will take to present your material. It is also a good idea to bring a watch with you to keep track of your time. II. Organization: Your presentation should be clearly organized with specific points and illustrative examples. It should have a logical arrangement and a well-defined introduction and conclusion. III. Clarity: Your audience should be able to hear and understand your presentation clearly. Your speech should contain the appropriate pacing, vocal projection, and word enunciation so that your audience has no difficulty understanding what you say. You should use formal, standard American English. You may use notes but make sure you speak to your audience; don't simply read from your notes but speak to your audience. IV. Body Language: You should strive to make eye contact with all members of your audience. Be aware of your body and avoid nervous movements that might distract from your presentation. Use purposeful hand movements as part of your presentation. Use facial expressions to create a more engaging presentation. V. Visual Aids: You may present your speech from behind the podium OR you may move out from behind the podium to make specific points related to your presentation. You may use the smartboard to outline notes related to your speech as part of your presentation. You may also use powerpoint or other visual aids if they are relevant to your presentation. NOTE: Along with your presentation, you should plan to turn in a ONE page, typewritten outline of your presentation. This should be an outline of the major ideas, points, and/or examples that will comprise your presentation. Give your outline to me before your presentation. See the guidelines posted on my website (http://www.westga.edu/~dnewton/engl2000/pg1.html) for additional information about the presentations.
