Bric
Barker Named Student Poet in Residence
President Beheruz Sethna has named English M.A. candidate Richard
A. (Bric) Barker West Georgia's first Student Poet in Residence. Bric
received word of the appointment through a letter from Dr. Sethna
on October 20, 2003. This position was created as the result of a
detailed and obviously persuasive proposal made by Bric and supported
by the English Department and the College of Arts and Sciences, as
well as the office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
In his new role, Bric will seek to enhance the role of poetry on the
campus and in the larger community through readings and other events
and through a program to bring poetry into the public schools in order
to create a younger, more vibrant audience for the genre. When Bric
graduates later this year, a new student poet will be named to fill
this position-part of Bric's lasting legacy to the a vibrant literary
life here at West Georgia. Look for details about the efforts to begin
this exciting new enterprise in the next issue of Footnotes.
