Gary Schmidt received his B.A. from Knox College, an M.A from
the University of California, Santa Barbara, an M.S.Ed. from Northern
Illinois University, and a Ph.D. in German Literature from Washington
University in St. Louis. Before coming to West Georgia in 2006 he taught
all levels of German language, literature, and culture at various institutions,
including Mount Holyoke College, Grinnell College, the University of Minnesota,
and the University of Stuttgart. His research examines the role of sexuality
and gender in constructions of German identity, with a particular emphasis
on postwar fiction and contemporary literature and film. In addition to
his book, The Nazi Abduction of Ganymede: Representations of Male Homosexuality
in Postwar German Literature (2003), he has published essays on Thomas
Mann, Joachim Helfer, and Wolfgang Becker’s film Good Bye Lenin!
Current interests include Turkish-German culture and contemporary Austrian
literature.
