Gary Schmidt received his B.A. from Knox College, an M.A from the University of California, Santa Barbara, an M.S.Ed. from Northern Illinois University, and a Ph.D. in German Literature from Washington University in St. Louis. Before coming to West Georgia in 2006 he taught all levels of German language, literature, and culture at various institutions, including Mount Holyoke College, Grinnell College, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Stuttgart. His research examines the role of sexuality and gender in constructions of German identity, with a particular emphasis on postwar fiction and contemporary literature and film. In addition to his book, The Nazi Abduction of Ganymede: Representations of Male Homosexuality in Postwar German Literature (2003), he has published essays on Thomas Mann, Joachim Helfer, and Wolfgang Becker’s film Good Bye Lenin! Current interests include Turkish-German culture and contemporary Austrian literature.
