Culture and Identity

This Learning Community focuses on helping students come to terms with the varying questions of culture and identity they face in college: Who am I? What are my core values? How do I carve out an identity for myself that is connected to yet independent from my family? How do I really feel about the important issues facing our culture today, and why? In this LC, students examine the external social forces that shape their most personal perceptions and goals. This LC is open to students in any major and includes core curriculum classes in English, Culture & Identity, American Government, and World Georgraphy.

To enroll in this Learning Community, apply for the Culture and Identity Learning Community when you register for Orientation. During Orientation Registration you will make a first, second, and third choice of First-Year Programs. Your choices will be transmitted electronically to the program coordinator of your first-choice program. That coordinator will evaluate your record and either accept you or forward your form to your second-choice program, and so on. You will be informed of your First-Year Program when you arrive for Orientation and check in.

Film: This Learning Community seeks students interested in the place of film in modern cultures, individual psyches, or global industrties. Students in the community will gain skills required to analyze film form, investigate the historical and cultural influences on the film, and explore the technical or scientific elements of film.

Creative Writing: This Learning Community seeks students with an interest in becoming writers. Students will build writing skills in an environment that allows creative development.

AAMI: The African-American Male Initiative is a Learning Community dedicated to the pursuit of personal excellence and community service among young African-American men. AAMI provides young African-American males an opportunity to learn from successful Africa-American men what it takes to thrive as students and professionals, and how to make a difference in their community.
