Culture and Identity

In order to better serve incoming Freshmen, UWG has created, as part of its First-Year programs, Learning Communities. A Learning Community is a group of 24 students who take their classes together during their first year. These courses center on a common theme, such as film, science, or health professions. UWG also provides a Learning Community for students who do not know what they want to study—Making Decisions. Learning Communities are available for both residential and commuter students.

Learning Communities offer a "small college" environment within the larger campus. Some of your classes will consist only of your fellow Learning Community students, while others will include non-Learning Community students as well. Classes will include English Composition, a thematic Learning Community course, and other core classes needed for graduation.

Applications to the Learning Community program will be taken during Orientation. During Orientation Registration you will make a first, second, and third choice of First-Year Programs. Your choices will be transmitted electronically to the program coordinator of your first-choice program. That coordinator will evaluate your record and either accept you or forward your form to your second-choice program, and so on. You will be informed of your First-Year Program when you arrive for Orientation and check in. Space is limited and every student will be evaluated on an ongoing basis until all slots are filled.

You will find all available Learning Communities for the 2007-2008 school year on either side of this page. Hover your mouse over image to get a brief description or left click to go to a homepage.
