About the GEMS Grant
Goal:
To increase the number of students seeking and
receiving baccalaureate degrees in established
or emerging fields in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) at
the University of
West Georgia.
Objectives of GEMS Initiative:
-
Generate enthusiasm for math and science
(GEMS) in selected first-year students.
-
Expose selected first year students to math
and all the sciences in an interdisciplinary course.
-
Promote critical thinking, teamwork,
problem solving, and active learning in this interdisciplinary course.
-
Ease the transition from high school to
college for selected first-year students.
-
Support a summer research experience that will
induct students into the scientific community, greatly influence their major
selection, and generate interest in continuing research.

Improve all students’ success in key
mathematics and introductory science courses, which can act as barriers to
success in the STEM disciplines.

Provide enhanced academic and career advising,
as well as mentoring by STEM faculty.

Provide opportunities for STEM students to
serve as teaching assistants early in their careers.
-
Enhance first-year science and math courses.
-
Increase retention of all undergraduate STEM
majors.
-
Provide faculty development opportunities to
all math and science faculty
-
Evaluate the program and disseminate the
results.
