GEMS Research Fellowships:
The University of West Georgia GEMS program runs an Academic Year and a Summer Research Program.  First funded in summer 2005, the GEMS Research Program at UWG has served a total of 49 students as of Fall 2006.  Participants are chosen through an application process.  To be eligible for consideration into either the Academic Year or Summer Program, the student(s) must have freshman or sophomore status.

During the summer qualified GEMS students spend eight weeks on campus as paid research fellows working on a collaborative research project with STEM faculty.  Students dedicate approximately 20 hours/week to their research projects (and other program activities). The goal is to allow participants to explore the realities and opportunities of science careers, research in particular. We want this research to be an enjoyable, memorable experience. The fellows received a stipend, free on campus housing and tuition for a one hour research class.  In addition, the students were expected to enrolled and pay for at least one three hour course.
The summer research experience began with an initial one-day orientation covering safety training, an introduction to the research process, an on-line literature searching tutorial, and lunch with the mentors. For the remainder of the summer, the fellows worked closely with their mentors on their individual research projects and all the students meet weekly for a seminar. The program ended with the students making presentations at a formal research symposium.
Students that meet the requirements are given the opportunity to continue their research in the fall and spring semesters.
