Rising Sea Level on the Georgia Coast (November 11-13, 2016)

Leaders: Chester Jackson (Georgia Southern University), Tim Chowns (University of West Georgia), Burt Carter (Georgia Southwestern College), Don Thieme (Valdosta State University), Jim Renner (Southern Ionics), Clark Alexander (Skidaway Institute of Oceanography), Brian Meyer (Geogia State University)

With climate change and sea level much in the news, the time is right for a field trip to assess the results of rising sea level on the Georgia coast. During the trip we will visit localities on St. Simons and Jekyll islands where rapid changes are occurring due to both erosion and deposition. This includes Goulds Inlet at the south end of Sea Island spit (Saturday morning), the northeast beach on Jekyll Island and Jekyll spit (Sunday morning). Chester Jackson will demonstrate the use of terrestrial LiDAR to document shoreline change.

On Saturday afternoon we will visit the new Southern Ionics Mission Mine where zircon, rutile and ilmenite are being mined from Pleistocene sands of the Penholoway shoreline.

Registration will be held Friday evening and a social is planned for Saturday evening. The trip will depart from the Holiday Inn both mornings at 8.30 am and conclude around 2.00 pm Sunday afternoon. Transport will be by bus on Saturday and private vehicles on Sunday.

The Holiday Inn will reserve rooms through November 4. Please make your own reservations as soon as possible, and mention the Georgia Geological Society to receive special rates. There are numerous motels on Jekyll, and you may want to check their room rates. There is also camping at Jekyll Island Campground (912-635-3021) or Blythe Island Regional Park, Brunswick (912-279-2812).

Please fill in the attached registration form and return by November 4 at the latest, to Dr. Karen Tefend, Geosciences, University of West Georgia, Carrollton, GA 30118 or you may register through Paypal.
