COURSE TEXTS (Bring to Lab)

<                    Marieb, Elaine, 2005.  Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual, Cat Version, 8th ed. or more recent.

<                    PhysioEx 5.0 CD-ROM, Laboratory Simulations in Physiology (packaged with lab manual)

<                    You must also purchase lab vouchers and 4 large Scantron forms for this laboratory or be denied entry to the first practical.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:  This course is the first in a two semester sequence designed to introduce the student to the structure and function of cells, tissues and organs, and sensory systems.  The second course in the sequence examines similar cells and tissues involved in organ systems associated with blood production, blood flow, immunity, respiration, digestion, excretion, reproduction, and endocrinology.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Ø                 Identify the major organ systems, their organs, and locations, and their major functions.

Ø                 Know how to use a microscope, proficiently.

Ø                 Identify the organelles of cells and their functions.

Ø                 Understand the processes of cell division.

Ø                 Classify tissue types by the cell types present and their histology and function.

Ø                 Recognize the histological and gross anatomical structure and function of the integumentary, skeletal, nervous and sensory systems.

Ø                 Utilize PhysioExTM to examine cell transport, skeletal muscle and nervous system anatomy and physiology.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:  I urge you to attend all lab classes.  Based on past experience, the higher the rate of absenteeism, and the less time you spend in lab, the lower the final grade.  Pop tests are also used to award attendance (see grading policy).

PREPAREDNESS POLICY:  Pop quizzes will be given in labs at the beginning or end of selected labs to reward students for reading their assignment before lab, and studying what was learned last week (extra credit; up to 3 points on your final grade).  Students are responsible in advance for all missed tests.  Pop quizzes cannot be made up.  Homework is due 1 week after each homework assignment unless special arrangements are made in advance with agreement by your instructor.  Deductions for late assignments will be 10 points per week.

CELL PHONE POLICY

Ringing cell phones are extremely disruptive in the lab and classroom.  If you must bring your cell phone to lab, make sure that the ringer is OFF.  Cell phones may not be worn during lab practicals and must be put out of sight.  Failure to comply with these requests will probably result in confiscation of your cell phone.

HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR GRADE:  Grades are based on a % scale of:

F = < 59.45, D = 59.45 - 69.44, C = 69.45 - 79.44 B = 79.45 - 89.44 A > 89.45

Your Grade = 0.8 x (Lab prac average) + 0.1 x (Review Sheet average) + 0.1 x (PhysioEx average) + extra points

MAKEUP EXAMS

No makeup exams will be given unless you notify me in advance and have a legitimate excuse.  Pop quizzes cannot be made up.

EXTRA CREDIT / CURVING OF GRADES

·        Bonus questions are given on pop quizzes.  They will not count against you.

·        We give pop quizzes over the material covered during lab or over the material from the previous week’s lab.  We give pop tests at the beginning of some labs and at the end of others.  By reading ahead, listening, and staying until the end of lab, you can earn extra credit on pop tests, up to a total of 3 points on the course grade.

·        We do not give extra credit assignments other than pop quizzes.  Grades will not be curved, but grades may be adjusted upward if computerized item analysis shows a question with high difficulty (< 30% correctness) and poor discrimination between high and low scorers.

CHEATING

Read and familiarize yourself with the student honor code as outlined in Appendix E of the student handbook.  Violations of the honor code will not be tolerated.  In particular, cheating and plagiarism (look it up) are prohibited.  Any student who cheats or plagiarizes material will receive a grade of “F” for the lab course.  THERE ARE NO SECOND CHANCES!!

Common Sense Safety Rules:

1. No eating or drinking in the laboratory.

2. Tie back long hair to avoid injury to yourself.

3. Long sleeves should fit well or be rolled to the elbow to avoid contamination of clothing.

4. Be aware of sinks, fire extinguishers, eye washes and other safety features

5. Clean your work area before leaving so that the lab is ready for the next group of students

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A PRACTICAL:

Step 1:  Have you met the prerequisites for this course?

Step 2:  Read your lab assignment before each lab and understand what will be done.  Review the objectives at the beginning, the background paragraphs before each activity, and the details of each activity.  Do this and you’ll score higher on pop tests, homework and practicals.  Reading comprehension is absolutely vital for this course.  If you can’t comprehend the material, go to the Excel Center for free tutoring (Strozier Hall, phone 678-839-6280).

Step 3:  Be able to define all the terminology and information in bold and italics, and to identify the terms in figures of your lab book.  Most critical terms and figures to understand will be identified on the blackboard, in Lab lectures or on Activity Cards placed on the lab bench.  You must be very familiar with histology, in photographs and microscope slides.  These will typically be on the practical.  There will be lots of study for those who want a C, B or A.

Step 4:  Be on time, and don’t leave lab early.  Historically, those who leave early make lower grades.  Stay and ask questions.  Your Instructor is a captive tutor during the last hour of lab.  Do your Review Sheets and PhysioEx exercises in Lab.

Step 5:  You’ll need a copy of a blank and a completed review sheet for each exercise to study with, as some of your most recent homework may not be graded the week of practicals.   Be able to understand and answer the questions without looking up the answers.  Keep trying until you can.  If you can’t, ask your lab partners or study group for help.  If your lab partners aren’t doing their part, find other ones.

Step 6:  Learn to Learn, and Study, Study, Study:  by yourself and with others.  Make flash cards or use the computerized flash cards in Course Compass.  Course Compass (included with your 2021 Class textbook) is quite useful with other study tools.

A Final Note:  College courses require you to know several times more material than high school.  We present material much faster.  You must develop better critical thinking, information recall and study skills.  Biol 2021L will be one of the most difficult courses you have ever taken, so don’t get behind.
